I still think he has some other kind of control issue going on that keeps wiping these out unless there's a lot of shitty trans rebuilders out there that keep screwing his transmissions up. If the trans is really broken again. If I was going to do any swap I'd either go manual or get the whole system figured out as to why things keep going bad. Just drop a th400 back in it from a good builder and be done with it. You've spent enough money that you will never make it back in fuel savings having over drive.

To me a Th400 won't work I must have the od. I don't care if I won't get the extra cost back in fuel savings.

Isn't it possible the rear end locking up caused this latest failure?
I kinda implied that earlier, but was also curious if the tranny crapped and the rear end tinking was just a coincidence

Drain the fluid into a clean pan and drop the trans pan. If there's anything more than just normal break in stuff then bad stuff happened.

Going 4L80 would be my choice if you insist on overdrive and auto. Friend of mine accidentally missed neutral and shoved his into reverse doing 70, it still works just fine.

I did that once with the TH400 on the regal when I still had the column shifter when I was about 19. Ran it up to 90 (this was on a closed course track of course;)) about until I needed to shift to 3rd, decided to just coast so I went to bump neutral and accidentaly went one click too far...doh! Suddenly I was trying to get it back a click or two without going too far the other way while trying to peel myself off the steering wheel from being slammed into it (I was wearing a seatbelt so it couldn't of been as bad as I remember being slammed forward) . When I finally got it back in the correct gear (it felt like forever but was probably only a second or two) I looked in the rearview mirror to see two long black marks exiting two trails of tire smoke. I was so worried I broke something, but nope, engine was still running, every gear still worked. I used that tranny for another 12 years after that and then sold it and it was still working. I installed a 4L80E of course. Still have the same rear axle too, although I swapped gear ratios when I installed the 4L80E.

If you want a tough 4 spd auto OD, a 4L80E is it. It shares many of the same parts of the TH400, but adds an OD planetary set and extra clutch pack to control it. The rear half of the trans is many of the same parts as the TH400.
