Yes sir that is correct, I'm thinking maybe the bushing the shaft rides on is worn and cauing fluid to come out. I'll look at my spare case and see what is going on. At any rate I'll just put it back together and seal it really good. I had a loose bolt on the tcase and the paper gasket was way to big.

The bushing has to get lubricated by the oil, some of it will pass to that area. Without oil, the bushing will die quickly. Without a seal on the shaft, there will be oil there. And I don't believe there is a place for a seal.
And the splines will not like running dry for very long.

Basically put it back together and quit crying? Lol

I would say quit worrying, but.. .
The 700R4 and 350 transmissions have the governor right there and it get lubricated by oil as well. As long as the seal on the t-case input is good, there isn't a problem. Yes, put it together.

As far as the NV4500 having a seal there, that's a different trans, more splines, bigger shaft. And I would bet that there is still some oil that gets to the shaft, but I haven't had one of those split in a while. Can't remember for sure.
I can tell you what I have seen for sure with PTO splines that didn't get greased often enough, is a shortened life span. And the "oh crap! My truck doesn't work "
scenario.....

Put a smear of good RTV (RightStuff) between the case sections.

Use brake cleaner and a rag and wipe the mating surfaces first.

That was me trying to get the auto vs manual thing going again. You know... instigating....

It's funny how much longer it takes me to do this when I haven't dropped this stuff out in over a year...

Took me a hour and a half to get the case out when it used to take like 25 mins. Been fighting putting the tcase on the output shaft for a hour now. :rotfl:

Also found where that leak was coming from, the pan has a weep hole to the output housing, when it's tilted the fluid runs out of it.
