So here starts my build up thread of my 86 dually.

Some background on the truck. Buddy of mine bought it for the axles. They were going on another friends jeep. Well he decided to go with a HP60 (good choice) The truck is from Las Vegas and so is very very rust free. I went down this spring and picked the truck up from him for very little money.

The reason for the buildup thread is simply motivation. This truck is supposed to tow Horton to South Dakota at the end of May.

So here is the truck when I got it

The front clip is in the back of the truck.

The plan for this truck is a very nice and comfortable tow rig, I have always loved this particular truck. The far future plans include a cummins swap and a gear vendors

The truck had no motor transmission or transfer case in it. I had a 465 and hydro clutch setup I pulled from an 86 one ton truck. Using the 205 that this truck had too.

The 454 was pulled from a 73 C&C truck.

Progress to date has been very slow due to me not feeling well and being busy at my shop.

Well the time has come to put up or shut up (or more to the point go to South Dakota and have tons of fun wheeling or not!)

To date, I have pulled apart the interior. I finished changing the color of the trim pieces today.

The motor is pulled apart, not fully rebuilding it but new bearings and seals. Pricing out some head work tomorrow.

Here are some pics of what I did tonight

The orginal interior color was tan or white or yellow depending on how sunfaded it was

The new color is gray, sorry about the cell phone pics, I used dupli color vinyl and plastic spray stuff, Didn't want to spend a ton on this as I have different plans for these trim panels later in life

Tomorrow, engine work and more interior stuff, plus pics of my headliner and materiel I got to cover it.

nice.i just picked my 91 up from the tranny shop and hope to get started on it later this week.once you get it and horton done you have to park them til june 15th 2011 so you dont break them before you get here lol.

i've always wanted one of those, there very hard to find. good luck :waytogo:

Well could not get much done today. Wifes birthday and all. Got the garage rearranged to get the truck in the garage finally.

That will be a huge step

Main thing I got done today is ordered some interior stuff. Man I have never spent that much money on any interior stuff before, but this is supposed to be my super nice truck and I want to look nice.

So custom fit seat covers

New Carpet and lower door panels to match all ordered today

Total cost to my door for interior stuff 666.00:eek1:

Looks like a good start for a build. Will be watching.

I here ya on the prices. I just got an order from LMC and couldn't get everything I wanted because I couldn't justify paying so much at the time.:(

Its a two stage paint that comes in a spray can, got it at autozone. Its duplicolor metalcast, I really like the paint its pretty tough too.

Anyone remember my transfer cases, they are purple using the same paint

couple of updates here, getting going on everything at once it seems, should have the carpet at the end of this week better get busy getting the pedal assembly in. Plan on having the motor together by Monday night. Engine bay cleaned up on Tuesday. Stab in the motor and trans and t-case on Wed, we will see how that goes.

Anyway some pics once again sorry I really need to stop being lazy and just go in and get my camera

So here is a pic with the front clip partly on, still need to get some body bushings for the front

Starting on redoing the door panels, I just used some dupli color stuff for vinyl and fabric on this. I plan on using another set of door panels and doing some cool stuff, but this will be a while off, I am going to change them so didn't not want to spend a ton of time on these.

Steering column is about ready to come out pedal assembly will be in soon, here is the shape the interior is in now

I dig the duallies Eric...And that valve cover paint looks like Candy Apple Red, how does it look in the sun?
Does that have the D70 rear then?
I got some C&C 14bff hubs and housing looking to give to somebody instead of throwing them at the recyclers.

great lookin build. your motivating me to do some much needed work on my truck!

update I messed up my motor so no more cheap rebuild on it, gonna get the bottom totally redone.

Had a couple friends offer me to take their trucks on my trip so the time pressure is off good thing too, machine shops are not known for speed LOL

Any way trying to decide which front end to go with.

Its an 86 with just a stock grille etc. I don't really like it much but wouldn't mind putting a grille like this on it. This option is going to be a future one I wont be able to swing the money for this grille right now

Here is my choice of a stock grille

The other option I have to work with is a stock 89 blazer front end that has the single headlight. Here is a pic of it

Really not sure which one I should do. The work truck grille is the cheapest option cause I have it, the stock grille is pretty broken up. I could probably swing the other stock gmc grille now too, but if I stay with the stock 86 dual headlight it will eventually go to the billet, well I will use the LMC plastic grille that looks like billet

Hopefully this weekend I will have an update in the form of how to redo your crew cab headliner that you kind of screwed up but think you can fix, by a total newb to stuff like that

Yah its a 70 in the back, the only thing I am going to change with the axles is gears, 4.56s with 235/85s is going to be all about the fun you can have at the double nickel:D

The paint looks good in the sun. Doesn't really pop like a real candy apple red would but hey these are underhood parts and the paint is actually pretty tough

headliners arnt hard to redo..
go with the 91 front grill.my crewcab had that nose on it til i swappes it to the 4 headlight type.

What kind of prep work is required to paint those interior trim panels? Im doing a similar build on my 88 crew cab, currently its white exterior with blue interior. Im changing it to satin black exterior and red/black interior.

I actually have other plans for my trim panels so this is just a temorary solution.

If you are going to do a permanently the only thing to do different is SEM I used dupli color stuff.

I washed all the panels with soap and water and then used a wax remover and degreaser. Getting them very clean is key. Since I am going to do something else next year all I did was paint them, if it was going to be permanent I would have used an adhesion promoter. I have had good luck with Bulldog and you can get it alot of different places.

I hope to have the truck up and running by middle of the month next month. I will report back on durability but I have moved them around a couple times and accidentally rubbed them on whatever and they held up well
