1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Updates- 2015

View attachment 230327

Hey guys, I finally get to start a build thread fresh from the beginning, I know this is a popular thing to do now a days, build up a crew cab but I have been lusting/searching for a clean one for the better part of 6years now.

I have searched through many craigslists ads, friends of friends, went and looked at many trucks over the years. Never found one I was happy with. I originally wanted to build a crew cab for wheeling, then as time went on, I kept building my blazer and then wanted a single wheel crew cab short bed, but as fate would have it, I have ended sup with an absolutly beautiful 2wd crew cab dually.

I recently graduated and wanted to get myself that "new" diesel truck I thought I could afford, then reality came back to me and the crew cab dream continued so here I am with an awesome project to build instead.

My use for this truck will be to tow my blazer occasionally, DD it and general truck use.
The specs will be the following

86 Crew Cab Dually
96 12v cummins
96 2wd NV4500
71 np205 divorced
83 Dana 60 for the 4wd swap

Late novemember my friend crashed his dodge diesel, totalled it so I bought it off him for the motor and sold the rest.

Here is the dodge

The motor- i have more pictures after 10,000bottles of engine degreaser,

The motor is going to get the advanced timing, 3200springs, fuel plate and thats about it, the truck will be a mild DD/towing build.

I am waiting on painting the motor till after i get everything done. The killer dowel pin fell out so i am fixing that and doing a LOT of seals, front main, rear main, oil pan, etc.

The transmission will be the 2wd Nv4500 out of a 96 gasser dodge, i had to swap out the input shaft for the larger diesel version and i will be welding my 5th gear nut so i do not have the issue many of these trannys have.

The transfer case is a np205 divorced, the reason i am going divorced it due to the initial cost of the the 4x4 trans and i couldnt pass up on the deal of the 2wd nv4500. This thing looked like it was at the bottom of the ocean when i got it.

I didnt have a truck yet but i knew it would be easier to find a clean 2wd one here in the north east, so i found a dana 60 for cheap.. again it was under the ocean for a while, gotta love plow truck hydro leaks.

Dana 60

Even got the stock drive flanges... FOR SALE

Good looking drivetrain right here...

So, i finally found myself a CLEAN crew cab and thank god for tax season. i searched craigslist like it was my job and after many sad rusty pictures i found one in PA, it was a washington state truck used with a camper in the summers only. After many pictures questions, my friend was nice enough to drive down with his truck and trailer to pick it up for me.

1986 GMC crew cab camper special 2wd, 454 new quadrajet, 400, factory tint, 4:10 rear, AC, cruise, nice running boards, 3 gas tanks, 1 where spare should be, chrome steel wheels, real nice seats NO RUST!!!! DID I SAY NO RUST!?? Here are the pics of our adventure...

the build is going to be slow go because of $$, i gotta sell some stuff and work keeps me pretty busy. I will update you guys once the motor trans are together! I have a week off of work in april so a lot will get done then.

What did that 60 come out of? Dodge? It's the drive flanges that have me confused.

dodge had bolt on flanges or hubs. 77-79 chevy did lots of k30 with 203 tcase in them. thay fit and look just like 1/2 n 3/4 ton but bigger for the 60 axle.

yeah far as i know it was a 1980 chevy dana 60., i stripped it all down tonight, lot more fun and quick with air tools and doing it for the 5th time. I figure without any cash going into it i can atleast clean it all up and have it ready to go when cash comes in!

All 1980 Chevrolet 4x4's used NP205's so they would not use a drive flange.

You got yourself a very lucky find for new england. Subscribed

tackling the cummins gasket kit today, oil pan, tappet gasket (nervous bot this one pump has to come off), rear main seal, front main seal, timing cover.

Maybe dana 60 clean up an rebuild as well.

worked on the motor today, new oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and i need to replace my tappett cover so the pump is coming off tmrw after work. Anyone ever see a cover this warped??

Messed up tappett cover!

hope you enjoy all the pics! nothing to exciting but pics are pics.

Don't forget to do the killer death pin fix while you got it all torn apart.
