1986 GMC K20, aka the old ladies shitbox

Gang green gall bladder tried to kill me a while back.
I was lucky I caught it before that stage.
I had time to reverse it with a very aggressive strict diet for a year.
Still have a functional gall bladder and clean as a whistle

Dang Kenny, I must have missed that. Hope you're feeling better and wishing you a full recovery!

I pulled this into the shop today to start chasing down a vibration that has slowly been getting worse. I found the splines on the front driveshaft had some slop, so I pulled it and went for a quick test drive. There was no change to the vibration, but i did notice the voltage hitting 18+ V and turned back to the shop quickly.

When I checked the alternator, it was too hot to touch. So I left it to cool while I tracked down a new one and ate lunch. Closest one I could find was 2 hours round trip, best one I could find was over a week out from Rockauto. So I left to grab the localish one, hit traffic at a dead stop 5 minutes from home, turned around and ordered one in to my local store to pick up tomorrow instead.

No one had a 10si? You didn't?
I have 6 cores but none that did not need a rebuild. My local stores don't stock squarebody parts these days, it all has to be ordered from the hub. I was going to drive there to pick it up yesterday, but the highway to get out of the valley had a road closure, so it wasn't worth the extra time to sit in traffic.

I have a few sitting on my shelves and they don't need rebuilding but they are used.
I am not sure if I ever need a replacement if I would use one or get a better bigger one new

I'm sure you would run what you have on hand if the need was to get it on the road that day. But ordering the 100+ amp alternator was also a bonus over rebuilding the stock 78 amp unit I had on hand.

Yeah the last one I had was a 63amp and went out, I was able to find a 125 amp for under $100 at napa.
Mind you that was 15 years ago

They are $125 for stock 78 amp and pushing $150-200 now for 100+ amps.
Yeah at the time a 125 amp was $300 because novelty.
So at under $100 I snagged it.
The case was gun drilled to help with cooling because the SI 12 is not a very big case and wouldn't cool enough for 125 amp

Got a known good 105amp power master I pulled of to put Pats custom cs130 140amp.
Handful of others beliw a 100amps most are good.

Maybe look for 12si parts store might have that

When I finally get the winstar fans on gonna need 200amps

I started up Bubba Gump the other day and the charge light came on and the gauge shows just over 9 volts. Checked the alt and its putting out 9.75, my parts stores stock one but for 1/3 more than ordering one online. must be the season for alternators lol

New alternator installed, the 108A was a 17SI so I had to return it for the stock 78A 12SI.

Then a new set of glue plugs. I had 3 dead by continuity test.
