1986 K30 6.2 Diesel Truggy Build - "The Mule"

Thanks Josh. The new place is in Hampstead, MD just into Baltimore County.

You see you had me with dropping the truck off to finish it but it is that second part with the money that gets me. Things are going to be a bit tight $$ until we get our current house sold and I am not going to have any time to work on it with all this going on.

Hahaha :D there's always a catch isn't there :doah:

Your right near my brother, he used to be in Hampstead off of gunpowder rd but now is like less then a mile from the 83 exit in Hereford.

Well it has been a few months since I have been on the forum. Here is a brief summary. We did get the house and we are moved in but still unpacking. My garage is nothing but piles of random boxes everywhere and I can find absolutely nothing. It is going to take a while to get unpacked and settled in. Here are a few pics of The Mule's new home.

The truck was one of the first things I moved into the new garage. There is way more stuff in there now. It is awesome to have a big enough garage to load and unload the truck from the trailer in the garage!!

We made a deal for the zero turn and the forklift. Zero turn is awesome I wish I bought one years ago. I can cut the 4+ acres of grass in just over 2 hours. Forklift is older and needs some TLC but it works for lifting pallets onto the storage shelves and flexing trucks out to check for fender clearance. :waytogo:

The lift in the garage is older and needs some TLC. It works but the safety locks to not work correctly so I need to get those fixed before I can use it.

The new house is awesome and the kids are really enjoying their extra space and playroom. We are slowly getting unpacked and settled in.

In the meantime after settling on the new house and moving we were working on the old house sprucing it up and getting it ready to sell. After only being on the market for 12 days we accepted an offer for just under asking price. We hope to close mid June.

In the mean time I am paying two mortgages and cutting two lawns and no progress on the truck. . .

New "shop" looks awesome Dan !!!! I say "shop" because I'd call it a warehouse :D

Thanks Josh. Wish I could have made it out last weekend. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Once we get the old house sold hopefully I can get some time to work on the truck. I may come see you when it is time to weld that truss on the front axle.

You'll be out soon enough wrinkling that nice sheet metal....er....I mean wheeling with us :haha:
It was a good trip...ran some pretty fun stuff....and definetly on the truss...just let me know when your ready.

A little progress I suppose.

Well we settled on the old house and I am back to only having one mortgage and one lawn to cut.

I also bought some new tools. . .

Up first I have been looking at buying a home powdercoat kit to do some of the brackets and panels on the truck. So my wonderful wife got me the Eastwood powdercoat kit for Fathers day and I acquired an old electric oven from a co-worker. I have not had time to try it but I see people getting good results with this kit.

After I got the powdercoat kit I realized how much I "needed" a blast cabinet. So Eastwood had one on sale and I drove up and picked one up.

Per Ryoken's recommendation in his blast cabinet build thread I am running the Scat Magic crushed glass with good results. I already wish the cabinet was larger but it will make prepping the small parts for paint and powder way easier.

Then just this week I sold my spare air compressor I brought from the old garage and scraped up enough money to buy this:

A Miller 211 welder. My old welder was an ancient Chicago Electric and still worked but I felt that I could never get it dialed in where I was happy with it. I have been eyeing this welder for a while but finally pulled the trigger because of the rebates they were offering. I got $200 cash back and a free Aluminum spool gun.

The 211 works on 110 or 220 volts and welds up to 3/8 thick. It also has the auto set function which for me the jury is still out on. It works but takes some playing with to get perfect.

Laying some test beads on 1/4 plate. Top weld was toward the "low" side of 1/4 auto set and the bottom bead was on the "high" side of 1/4 auto set.

I did final weld some of the panel tabs on last night so I guess I did make some progress on the truck.

Update; Some progress.

First another new toy to fill my building 1957 Ford 821 with Ford loader and Sherman Backhoe:

It is an antique but it runs and everything works. Has some leaky cylinders but overall works well. I put it to work when I got home digging out stumps. Not nearly as fast or as powerful as the new stuff but we got a great deal and it beats a shovel.

Anyway, I was recently motivated by wheeling with newoldscottsdale77 and jt512 and there are a few car/truck shows this weekend that I am thinking about stopping by with the truck even though it is not finished.

Finished the spare tire mount by finish welding the tubes I had tacked in. Also welded a D ring on to attach the top strap to. Overall very happy with it and the tire is very secure.

I also re-attached the West Coast Mirrors. They fit the character of the truck pretty well. Don't worry I will not be wheeling with these mirrors I plan on getting a set of tube doors.

I finally re-connected the rear brakes and bled them out so I had 4 wheel brakes again. I also went over the entire truck making sure everything was tight and buttoned up. I plan on venturing out on the street with the truck for some short trips soon and I am interested to see how it will behave.

Next on the list is the serpentine swap and getting ready for full hydro steering.

Is there no lighting in half your shed?

Martin

Yeah for some reason only one corner of the building is lit. It has transparent panels in the roof so lighting during the day is not an issue but at night it is really dark. Slowly getting more lights hung which is not an easy task with 14 foot ceilings.

I have always thought that CK5 was probably the best most helpful forum on all of the vast interwebs but today that was proven to me. Last night I posted some pics of my "progress" and Martin made a comment about the lack of lights in my shop and I told him I was working on it.

A local CK5 member K588 who had bought some parts from me before shot me a PM this morning saying he had some lights he wanted to get rid of. Well he ended up dropping them off tonight after work. 13 metal halide lights for which he wanted no money and he delivered them!! I just want to say thanks again Derek!

I also added 50 more pounds of pressure to the rear shocks to help level it out and to do that I had to get the weight off the rear so on to the lift.

As you can see there is quite a bit droop 9 inches to be precise. It may make a maiden street voyage to get diesel fuel tomorrow.

Most excellent update!

Interested to see how its street manners are.
