1986 K30 6.2 Diesel Truggy Build - "The Mule"

Well I am glad my off topic question had a happy ending.

Martin

Yes thanks for the derail :waytogo:

Well The Mule made its maiden voyage on the street today to get some diesel.

Gas station is about 3 miles down the road from the house. It drives pretty well but the steering wonders quite a bit and it has some bump steer. I am not worried about this because it is still factory push pull right now but I have all the parts to go to full hydro.

Made it back home no issues but when I got back into the garage I realized the transfer case had puked fluid out the vent and covered the rear of the truck. Now I knew the Atlas has a bad input seal and was overfilled but I did not realize it would puke out the extra fluid on such a short drive.

So now the underside and much of the lower tube is covered in transmission fluid :dunno: This is going to make prepping for paint a real pain.

Paging Ryoken what is the best way to get rid of the oil before I sand and prep for paint? I have heard some say paint thinner, some reducer, then other say simple green or 409. Thoughts??

nice hot soapy solution initially, is good.. f$ck that simple green, etc.. use something like Spray 9, Dawn, etc....

final degreasing before paint is always best done with denatured alcohol... damp towel/dry towel, with paper towels works great.. no fuzz......

rig looks badarse BTW.... :waytogo:

AWESOME Thanks man it means a lot coming from you! I will try some Spray 9 or 409 or something along those lines to get rid of the oil before I sand. I have to get some more Ryoken Green primer ordered so I can get maybe at least get this thing in primer before it gets cold.

you want something that gets real nice and soapy/sudsy... even liquid laundry detergents work well...

The elusive primerk5 came over for a BBQ today and I could not resist grabbing some pics.

Gotta love the full verts and that Hickey Enterprises Hood!!

Well another year and the truck is not done. It is hard to believe that it has been 3 years already. Moving this year has put quite a dent in my free time = pretty much no truck time. My honey do list is slowly shrinking here at the new house and I am hoping to hit the truck hard in the spring.

I did get me one of those new "Dual Row LED" light bars!!

BRIGHT TOO!!

Gonna need a long cord!! Actually picked up some of these LED shop lights to help light up some of the dark corners in my shop. $36 at Sams Club for 4' long 4500 lumens.

These along with the metal halide lights K588 gave me should give me plenty of light.

Hopefully the new year will bring me more time to work on the truck any maybe get out on the trail in 2016. Who knows if it says warm here I may even get some work in on the truck this winter.

Haha I love the light bar mod.

Hopefully you get some time to work on it some more. Keep up the good work

Well it has been a few months since I last updated this. So still no progress on the truck really but I have been putting in some shop time getting things organized.

Been also working on projects around the new house. The biggest project we tackled was geothermal HVAC. When we purchased the house last year we knew that it was in need of new HVAC. After getting a bunch of quotes we decided on geothermal for the reduced running costs and also because of great rebates offered by the federal, state, and county bringing the cost back inline with a high efficiency heat pump. We also did all new duct work throughout the entire house. I made a deal with the contractor to do all the digging. They drilled three wells 300 feet deep and I got to dig from the house and connect all the wells

Gave the old backhoe a workout and ran into a bunch shale but we got it done. Then I had drywall work to do in the house because of running the new duct work. Anyway, that project is pretty much done and we love the geothermal. The house is much more comfortable and an even temp in every room.

There have been lots of new additions to the shop in the past few months too. My uncle owns an RV dealership that is unfortunately closing mainly due to a location that is no longer in a good neighborhood. I worked there for my first job working summers and weekends for many years. When they decided to close I was given first pass at the tools and etc so here is a list of the bigger items:

Sweet 1970s Pepsi machine that is fully functional and keeps sodas ice cold.

Huge drill press made by the Buffalo Forge Company

No idea on the age of this thing but it works well and is nice and slow for metal fab.

Nice older Victor Torch set, bottles, and cart along with a triple stage transmission jack. We have put the transmission jack to good use as Nick's (newoldscottsdale77) truck is currently on my lift with no transfer case or transmission. He is in the middle of building an Ecobox and swaping in a turbo 400 trans.

Last but not least an old 10-10 Coats tire machine that is good for steel wheels and an Ammco 1030 balancer.

The balancer was unfortunately 3 phase power so I got to have the fun and cost of setting up a 3 phase generator. It is a 1986 model but it works great and will handle up to a 42" tire up to 140 lbs. Also got a 40' sea container out of the deal.

Well anyway my shop is now more equipt and I am hoping to get lots of time in the shop for the mule very soon.

VFD's are an easy way to get three phase power to that thing.

I actually ended up getting a deal on a Rotary converter. You can see the control box just to the left of the balancer. Probably way overkill for the balancer but now I have it if I come across anything else 3 phase.

Well got some time to do actual work and kick this build back into gear. One of the last major mechanical projects left is the dana 60 teardown and full hydro steering. So yesterday with the help of newoldscottsdale77 we pulled the 60.

I found that cart in my shop left by the previous owners and it worked out perfect for putting the 60 on. On to the teardown.

Spindles were mint no rust. Bearings we good too all original Timken.

Look how clean the inside of the hubs are.

Kingpins are like new as well. Keep in mind this axle only has 16,000 miles on it so it should look like new I suppose. The axle had a ton of grease and crud on it since the oil cooler lines had been leaking on the truck for years before I got it.

After a quick degrease and powerwash then a few mins with the wire wheel it was looking much better. Pulled the cover and not surprisingly everything looked new. Confirmed open axle with 4.56 gears.

Pulling the trigger tomorrow on a Grizzly locker, install kit, and Yukon Hardcore Locking hubs. I think I have everything else I need for the complete rebuild, truss, and full hydro stuff. Going to try to keep this build moving!
