Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
Anybody ever try this trick with zip ties on the pedal side of the throttle cable?

Never on a square body but the “zip tie mod” was a common mod for fixing stretched throttle cables in the Ford Ranger/Bronco II community. I did it on my ‘96 with good results.

My bet is that the throttle cable bracket isn't positioned properly. It often takes some custom to make things proper, from what I found on a couple of carb swaps.
I didn't watch your video, though.

You should be able to bend the bracket. The tap where the cable snaps in, bend it towards the fire wall.
If after adjusting the cable to get wife open throttle, you still don't get accelerator pump soon enough, it is adjustable also.
Zip tie the choke cable so it can't flip into the battery hot bus bar. It is protected by fuse link, but who needs that head ache. Would probably destroy the choke cable before fuse link blew.

Yeah at least wrap tape on the choke cable near that junction block, or put a 3-4" shrink tube on it where it passes that terminal. You might have to get custom and weld tabs on that throttle cable bracket behind the carb, to move it back an inch or so, to get all your cable travel back.

Yeah, what he said. Get that goddamn AFB off there and put a 750 or 800 Q-jet on like GM intended :D:DAFB's are great carbs too and yeah you could make it work good on there, but an otherwise bone original unmolested 86 K30 oughta have a Q-jet. That intake is a great upgrade tho, leave that, and it's drilled for square and spread bore (Q-jet) no adaptor needed! Due time due time, use what you got until you can drop the $$$.

I got the choke cable pulled away from the battery bus bar. I used a zip tie to pull it downward toward the floor. It added a new bend into the "path", but I tested it out and it seems to work just fine still.

Next, I ate up some slack in the throttle cable by using the zip tie trick. Believe it or not I got three zip ties onto the throttle cable after pulling the slack completely thru the gas pedal arm. In the video the guy warns about putting too many zip ties on because it will cause your throttle to be open all of the time. I checked the throttle plates after putting the zip ties on and I think I am good.

When looking at the throttle plates, I cracked the throttle a few times just to double-check the accelerator pump. No gas came out this time. I'm not sure what's goin on yet but I need to read about accelerator pumps a little bit because right now I don't really know how they work. I'll keep you guys posted with what happens and will ask if I have any questions.

If engine hadn't run in day, or two the bowl may have been empty.
Start the engine warm it up, shut it off then look for accelerator pump squirt while working the the throttle.

Will do - excited to take it out for a test drive with this new throttle pedal.

I took the truck out last night to help my girlfriend. She is opening a bakery here in Denver (queue the sweatshirt I'm wearing) and we went by a bike shop that's going out of business so that we could buy a big shelf from them. She snapped this photo after we loaded the shelf into the bed.

The throttle feels great now. I love it, it feels like a totally different truck. This thing is pretty fast, at least by my standards!

Unfortunately, after the drive to the bike shop, I had to have my girlfriend jump me to get it started again. When trying to start it, I got two really good cranks out of it. On the third crank, the starter was turning over the motor very slowly... so we decided to jump it.

It was running for about 30 minutes prior to being shut off, so I'm thinking that the battery is in poor shape now (or I have a really bad draw, but we've talked about that already).

I didn't get to check the accelerator pump last night, but I'm thinking I'll get some solid wrench time this weekend. The weather here in Denver is really nice and I want to spend as much time as I can on the pickup. I think I'll have the battery tested at O'Reilly's and I'll also replace the cracked battery cable.

What did the voltmeter show while the engine was running?

Is the battery low on water?

Martin

Nice. Glad you got it running good. Yeah either an old battery that won't hold a charge, or the alternator isn't charging, or both. I'm thinking it's the aforementioned. If you have a voltmeter put it across the batt. terminals with the engine running, if the alt is charging it should read 13.5-14.5 volts. Or look over the guys shoulder at orielly while he checks it. If it's not charging, it'll be below 12 volts while it's running. Turn all the lights on, heater, etc and watch that number drop. Might even kill the engine.

Got out there and started this thing for the first time in a month!

Voltmeter read right about 12.4 when the engine was running:

Also took a look at my positive battery cable again, the thing is smoked:

Ended up picking up a new clamp from AutoZone a while ago, but honestly don't think I'll use it. Probably gonna just remove the positive cable and get a full replacement instead. I don't think the new clamp will work.

Dude. Don’t put that POS clamp on there.

Auto zone should have a generic positive cable that will fit. Just use a tape measure to rough out the length. Get the next size up they sell from what you measured for a little wiggle room.

I’m going to make a run to the pull and pay yard tomorrow if you want to come. Bring the truck and we can throw the cable on when we get back. Just tossing it out there.

Common for many to over tighten battery clamps. It only needs to tight enough that you can't rotate the clamp around the post.
Don't over do it.

Yes the clamp you pictured, is dire emergency gotta get the F outta here only use.

Good idea to replace the whole cable.

Yes sir I'd love that. Shoot me a DM or text. I'm down any time. Replacement cable is definitely in my future.
