1987 GMC V3500 Crew

Tow rig and daily driver
I drove this truck home after buying it. It ran well, but definitely has a list going that needs attention
  • Headlights need to be replaced, they suck
  • Heat/AC: Defrost does not work, big issue where I live. Probably the plastic lever broken and there is an aluminum replacement available.
  • Alignment: this thing needs an alignment very bad. I could not keep it straight on the road.
  • Brakes/hydroboost: brakes and steering quit when the engine drops to idle. Could be the pump or a valving issue. I need to figure this out as it is the worst time to loose power steering and power brakes is when you slow down to turn.
  • Passenger side mirror is a cheap aftermarket replacement and I need to track down an OEM mirror so I can see.
  • Driver side seat belt is stuck and needs to be cleaned and lubed
  • Temp guage pegs to hot when the engine is barely warm
  • Oil pressure guage pegs past max
  • Dash lights did not work on the drive home but are now working when I pulled it into the shop
  • Cracked passenger side headlight bezel
  • Tires, rear have a 2006 date code with lots of tread, fronts don't have a 4-digit date code and may be pre 2000

The seller had this truck listed for $16K with a fresh 502 but pulled the ad due to low ball offers, pulled the 502 and replaced it with a low mile, stock 454. Then he relisted it for $13K, and right in our budget. So i ran down as soon as I was able to get the seller to respond.

And the day after bringing it home, I had a get a few pics of the line up. My wife told me she wanted this truck, but secretly wanted me to buy it for myself so we would have matching trucks.

After a little clean up in the shop, I had to pull this one in and start on the list. Only to find a few more things to add to the list as usual.

The front tires didn't look right when I bought it, looking closer the date code is not 4-digits, so they may be from before 2000. Rear tires have a 2006 date code. Traction was not great on wet roads and I plan to tow with this, so it will need new tires before being ready for the road.

I also didn't notice the cracked headlight bezel when I bought it.

Thats a pretty solid looking crew dually. Makes me regret selling my dad's 86 that was very similar.

How's the 454 run?

Technically, I tried to buy it on the first ad with the 502, but the seller didn't respond to me. I thought it sold right away. The second time, I got a message in early.

Runs very strong. The only issue I will have is the size of the gas tank, but I have some 40 gallon Suburban tanks I can get mounted eventually.

Haha dual 40 gallons? :haha:
The stock 454 in the 86 we had was gutless and got maybe 6-7 just driving around or I probably would have kept it

Technically, one 40 gallon suburban tank could be used with the stock dual 20 gallon tanks... but the idea is to not need to turn the truck around. I have not checked mileage yet, but seat of the pants calcs say 8-9 mpg driving it home after I bought it.

Today, I took a trip south to gather parts and new headlights were at my door when I made it home as well. I didn't realize the headlight bezels i found were aftermarket until I held them in my hands, would have been nice to see that mentioned in the sellers ad. But, they were what i could find quick, so I grabbed two pairs for $30.

I also picked up a pair of GMT400 towing mirrors with the 3-leg design similar to this truck. I figured the brackets were wrong, but the mirror had would at least be correct, and that worked out the way I thought.

My 454 4 spd C30 gets 10 mpg no matter what. Mine really sucks as it only has a single 20 gal saddle tank. Didn't even know you could order them that way but I guess so. I really want to convert mine to 4x4 one day to make it way more useful as a farm and mtn truck.

Anyone know if the 17" Dodge dually wheels have the correct center hole for GM applications?

Best I can tell, Dodge wheels are 4.776" (121.3mm) while Squarebody GM wheels are 4.563" (115.6") center bore. About 1/4" diameter difference. So the worst case would be making custom centering bushings if I want to go that route.

Damn Kenny what a score on a beautiful crew cab! I kick myself about once a week for selling my srw crew cab but I will have another some day. I'm subscribed to this build with such a good starting point, it will be fun to watch.

Lots of work for a 1" jump in rim size and then still need 2 more . And the machine work rings will be thin .

I would find rims smaller and punch them open or get rims that just fit my self .
