1987 K5 gets a LQ4

Not sure what Lenger Racing out of GR charges, but he seemed to do a decent job tuning nates 4.8 in his C30. Thats if you are looking for someone local. Thats hard to beat the price for 75 bucks. An efi live license cost 125, and HP tuners credits are pricey as well unless you do it for job and purchased the unlimited package.
Maybe ill have to look into them. Might be handy to have it done right here seeing as i live 10 mins south of downtown. That would be nice if i ever need to have anything tweeked. Yeah dont see myself buying the software and doing much tuning myself.

Borrowed the cherry picker from work and got both engines pulled and the 6.0 on a stand. Gotta put in the x-member yet, and clean/regasket the 6.0. Oh and i have 4 exhaust studs i have to drill out :doah:. Maybe ill get a start on those things this afternoon yet. Well see.

I should probly get ords steering brace too before i stab the engine in there. I inspected the frame at that point, no cracks yet :waytogo: so ill be good with just the bolt in. Figure i better do that now before it starts to crack.

Not a whole lot going on right now, hard to get motivated when you work on cars all day long. Been cleaning up the 6.0, and have new valve cover gaskets and valley cover gasket on. Been wire wheeling the front part of the frame while i have everything out of the way and ill paint it before i put the 6.0 in. Also i noticed when i drained the oil that someone had stripped the threads out and put a heli coil in there :doah:. But luckily at work today i stumbled on a brand new pan out of a express van that we put a new engine in around a year or so ago and we didnt need the pan for it. Score! My boss said i could just have it lol. Also look what came to the shop today  738695F1-2F4D-40AD-9623-48855CECEBA8.jpegFinally found a 241.Well, i found quite a few on car-part. But i finally ordered it on tuesday lol. Need to get a 32 spline input for it now, and looks like at least a tailshaft seal. 15BABCF4-2988-4528-B88E-4CF9620F091D.jpeg

Looks awesome! Any updates on how the rest went? I'm gonna be doing this swap in my 91 and I'm planning on using the ORD crossmember as well

Thanks! And im no where near finished yet. Life has kind of gotten in the way...should be getting the motor in within the next week or two hopefully. Got the fuel pump and a new sender installed just need to put the tank back in. Have to swap shafts in the t case yet. And all the little stuff like hooking up the wiring/exhaust/fuel lines/etc...oh and i painted the front part of the frame quick, got new motor mounts and holes drilled for the crossmember, just need to bolt that in. Hope to have it driving by june. But well see.

Nice nice, did you end up getting ORD crossmember with the mounts? Looking good though, getting me excited to get started on mine

No i just go their crossmemeber and sticking with the clamshell mount for now, however i did get new poly ones as my rubber ones were crumbling. And thanks man! Yeah im excited to have it finished so i can drive it!

Its motivating me to finally get the gears in motion for a motor swap. Those motor mounts look awesome. Nothing like a clean black frame eh, makes your pants fit funny.

1339E564-6A57-4DAE-9FA4-722DC3B25CC3.jpegGot some progress on this thing yesterday finally, got the engine and trans installed and the trans x-member moved back on the frame. Ended up working quite well. 8F2C4104-C457-461E-B056-5E708DCCDA10.jpegI am using the dd adjustable upper motor mounts and i had the motor slid all the way forward at first, that way i wouldnt have to move the trans crossmember. But when i tried that the oil pan was touching the ord high clearance engine x-member. 6696417D-3B92-490E-95B7-A93A3B59B9E2.jpegAfter i moved it back about an inch it looked much better. Still a little close but ill keep an eye on it. 020B9583-2676-4543-9311-5D52FA3740A0.jpegF449A9FD-80ED-41DD-B461-7CF40A298D5D.jpegThen after tightening the bellhousing bolts and making sure everything else was lined up i hung the trans crossmember from the trans mount and marked the holes to drill. Only had to move it back about and inch and a half which was perfect, cause any farther back and it would have been at where the bottom of the frame gets smaller. Hope i dont have to make any major driveshaft adjustments when i get the tcase up in there, but i still need to tear that down and replace the input shaft.

Also spacers should go on top of the frame to use longer bolts for more clamping force.

When tearing that tcase down, get a good set of duckbill snap ring pliers.
Like these? ;)64288C2F-020D-4B27-A331-72AF080F22B6.jpeg

And ok thanks! I dont remember removing any but ill have to dig through my bolt bin and see what i got. I remember the donor truck had some on its trans crossmember so maybe i can use those.

Think you can get me a measurement of how wide those dirty dingo mounts are? I’m running the TNA crossmember and mounts, wondering if they would work with the DD. I’m wanting to push my motor a little further forward, got the TNA mounts maxed out.

Also since no on has noticed yet but the 6th pic i posted i showed my dumb mistake that i made. I almost had the trans bolted up before i noticed, i had forgotten to put the flexplate on when i did the rear main seal :doah:. Glad i noticed before i got it all back together!
