1987 K5 Rebuild- narrow and dovetail the body-Painted

it maybe because its 6am when I am writing this, but you guys are suggesting that I do NOT have any plates? Just holes in the floor and then notch it onto a tube that comes off of my frame?

Not unless your planning on removing ether the cage or the body at anytime in the future.

Ok, sounds good, to accommodate body flex etc, how big of holes do you guys recommend? 2" 2.25? The tubing is 1.75 OD.

1.75. Body is not going to flex with a cage welded around it to the frame. You can weld the body to the cage too. It's not moving.

oh ok, I dont know why I feel so torn on this subject, I think I have just been reading to much and asking to many questions. So I should NOT use the 3" plates I ordered for top and bottom of the body. I think my plan after reading is going to be, create the frame mounts, have it bend up through the floor, then slug it and weld it to the B pillar. Yes?

Dovetail, narrowed k5 blazer

Today I picked up a compressor from craiglist, pretty happy with the older craftsman unit, should work well with my tubing bender and impact gun.

While in the garage I took the top off, roll bar out (for sale) tailgate off, and started dovetailing the rear end. I am VERY happy with how this one side came out so far, I will tackle the other side in the morning.
Last full size shot

I measured out the angle I am cutting, from the tailgate wall, i measured over 12", then 3 inch off the wall, overall it ended up being about 9inches total I took out, maybe a little more.

I then attached ratchet straps to the garage door lift and the other bedside and gave them both tension.

I am pretty happy with how well they lined up and worked out well for welding.

More welding

In order to prevent the beds from bowing out, I added some angled tube pieces, I will tie the bedside into the cage once that goes in there.

Over all, i like it a lot so far.
So what did you do at the front of the bedside? Did you cut it loose on the inside and or outside then weld it back or just let it bend? This is on my to do list after I get my truck running again. Your truck is looking good. Definitely going to follow your progress

If you are welding it to the frame there's no reason to plate it to the body if you want to make it removable then put the plates in.

I think Dave did his that way because his body is junk and he is going to replace it eventually .

I cut a small slice out of the top of the bedside right behind the B Pillar, and then down on the floor where the step is I cut a slot between the wall of the bedside and floor, ill get a pic soon.

Hey everyone, its been a while between graduate school, adopting another dog, normal house stuff and work, there has been no time for truck work. I was finally able to put in a few hours this past week. Now I am stuck... I will have rear passengers, so my question is, what do i do with my tube work??

This is what I have so far. Now, I am stuck on what to do in the back.

Welp, ive been sneaking in some time here and there, getting the rear to a decent point. There still needs to be some bracing, frame connections X brace behind the seats. Either way, I am pretty happy how this is turning out.
