1988 K5 the "Big Blue" compromise

X how ever many guys liked your bumper design! Looks tits!
As well as your fender trimming! Nice looking work… what’s that beer your drinking? Seems to work better than mine? :haha:

Nice clean looking rig!

Thank you sir! tits are the best compliment a guy's :k5: could receive.

Its been 10-12 years since those pictures were taken... I have a lot more to get in here, and the truck definitely is not as clean as it used to be -I better work up to it slowly. Don't want to go from "looks good" on page 7, to "WTF HAPPENED?!" on page 8

Lol!

Looking forward to more posts!

I tried to find some photos of the wiring and final winch bugs getting worked out- but i couldnt find any, so i took a few new ones last night at the gas station. Try not to notice 10-12 years of wear and tear and any out of place things... will get to all that in time.

Alright - put your blinders on!

I made some brackets for the solenoids and remounted to the inner fender

Went to the welding shop and bought the end of a spool of cable- hope i did my homework on the gauge vs amperage needed for the 6.6HP motor! -too late now, cant remember!

removed the socket for the winch remote, and relocated on to a new bracket on the core support -right through the grill

its gotten old and i need to find a new cap for it. maybe the smittybuilt line is still using that socket? i should call 4wheel parts.

Anyway, with the new bumper i can stand on it up front if buried in mud or snow, and i can run the winch cable through the door/window if needed

And i got worried about what would happen if the solenoids caught fire, or welded shut and would not turn off?
so i cut a piece of aluminum to fit the open space in the driver seat bracket... and fitted a masster switch that i can reach from my seat. I can reach it with the door closed if need be.
I also collected a few of those neat trouble lights from under the hood of other junkyard trucks, and mounted one there as well. 12 foot corded light, and master switch for the winch, and since my windows are all manual, I kept everything off the doors in case i want to remove them

Should I be worried about having a main line to the battery plumbed directly under my ass? I tried to grommet and sheath all the cabling extra well.

-what's a little 600-800 AMPS arcing around under my butt anyhow???

Have not gotten a whole lot of use out of the winch, but so far i can remember:

-saving a dumbass in a stock ford ranger that thought he could go rock crawling without other people around to help

-dragging my friend's 2 seat race car back on to the cow trail he had fallen off of and was just barely not rolling over and over and over down the hill

-Dragging my old S10 Jimmy down the street with the parking brake on, because a friend was there to watch, and because beer

-tearing a tree out of my back yard

-dragging a burned car wreck back onto the pile of other burned car wrecks so it wasn't restricting the throughway for the buggies and quads

-saving my own ass when the fuel pump had "issues" and i needed to get back over the top of a hill before my buddy could tow me back to the road

-dragging a dumbass in a car out of sandpit at the end of a road that he and that car had no business being on

-winching my dumbass friend up the side of a ravine because he was on foot and too tired to walk, and told me he wouldn't sue if the cable snapped (he still kinda had to walk - not like he was dangling in the air or something)

-winched a pool and the surrounding deck out of a hole in the ground in about 5 pieces.

-winched my outhouse back up into an upright position

-straightened fenceposts so my gate would open and close

I tore one down where I now live, and there use to be one where I lived before this........

I cant afford a house in the city here, but i bought 5 acres in the desert a few years back. There is an outhouse- but since the house came with an indoor toilet and a functioning septic system, I choose to not use the spider incubator outhouse.

there it is - out of focus in the background -right under a flying knife.

Even if one could afford a house in the city, why would one punish themself like that???

So, a few months later, I was driving my Blazer for work -had a meeting out in Palmdale with a customer, and thought maybe I would go play on a trail somewhere on the way home.

On the way out I saw a few trails that headed away from the freeway and out into the hills.

On the way back, I pulled off and found access to one of them. Couple miles out, the trail got narrow, went up a fairly steep hill, and got really loose. I dropped down a gear and put my foot all the way into the gas pedal- didn’t want to have to back up all the way down that trail, and had hoped the Blazer would be able to paddle its way up…

it quit paddling, and started bouncing. and THAT resulted in my relearning (the hard way), one of my rules about not getting in over your head without friends and additional trucks there to help you if an emergency should arise.
