1988 V30 Build (on a Craigslist budget)

Well I drove down to Wallingford, WA today to pick up my Craigslist table. I looked all around, Home Depot, Harbor Freight and other places for a heavy duty table but either they didn't carry them, they were out of stock, or they were hundreds of dollars. I should have just looked at Craigslist first. Picked up an industrial grade steel table with 3" square tubing legs and a solid 7' wood top for $60. Sorry for doubting you Craigslist.

I got the first hub pulled off of the rear Rock today. Thankfully, the lube that drained out looked recent and the bearings looked like new. You never know what you're going to find. That's a load of my mind.

The previous guy had taken the original brake baking plates off with a plasma cutter. There isn't a single nick on the housing, but I need to get the remaining circle of baking plate off of the housing flange. Having that little piece will aid in laying out the new baking plates anyway.

Always an adventure!

You are a brave man for working on that pig that high off the ground ;)

Not that brave my friend - - The strap leading up to the engine hoist is just out of the picture. I had tension on it the whole time. Seriously, getting the heavy parts up at waist level, so I'm not bending over is a huge help.

Good catch!

You know what's funny? I recognize that '88 Crew Cab from Cle Elum, Wa. from the craigslist ad. I was watching it when the ad first came out and printed it... didn't have the money to buy it until more recently and finally called the guy and it was sold. I guess I found out where it went! Haha.

It was a 454, 4spd/205 setup right? Guy was asking $2500?

My '81 Crew Cab is way too high. Part in fact that we're trying to make it the tallest and largest truck in the NE. Washington and N. Idaho area that goes to the mud bog in Moyie Springs, Idaho (just east of Bonners Ferry).

We actually cut down the spring perches that the previous owner of the axles had welded on. They were 12" tall, and we shortened them down to 6", to try and be sure to clear the motor oil pan from the huge toploader centersection. Well it's for sure clear. In a way I wish it were lower, but since the thing is meant to be big and only go through mud, we'll try and run it this way. It's kind of rediculous... including the body lift it's like a total of 25" of lift. 12" springs, the 6" spring perch, 4" from lowering the spring hangers/longer shackles, and then the 3" body lift.

Here's my other '81, sadly stripped down for now, but getting a 5.9 12-valve Cummins, NV4500, 205, and Dana 60 and 14-bolt with 3.73's, and will be running the same 6" lift and 35" tall tires as before, along with a '90 Suburban nose clip and doors. It's the main tow rig, which isn't towing anything anytime soon.

There's a point where you want to do something because its just COOL. I really don't need the truck at all, and certainly not lifted with larger tires. I just think its cool, I like thinking about what to do and tracking down parts to do it with. In a nut shell, its not justified, just cool (in my mind).

That right there is reason enough for me!! You do it because you can, you want to & you think it's cool! To hell with what everybody else thinks!!

Bring it on!!

Later,
Buddy

Yep, that Cle Elum truck is the one parked in front of my house now. Kinda funny (well, sort of) I looked for a long time for a clean, straight truck with the right drive train at the right price - - - and now I'm putting Rockwells under it. Could have bought a 2wd cheaper. Whatever.....

Dude, I have GOT to get out and see your rig. That is just bad to the bone.

Good times!

Don't move to Florida :screwy:

These are something like 78" tall

Yeah the trucks down there are way huge. Up here the largest size tire that largest local mud bog is 54's. Several 52's and some 53's, and lots of 44's. Im assuming over time I'll have to start looking for some 66's.

You know, I got to thinking about what you said and so today I set up to drill off what's left of the brake baking plates. I started out low, just on jack stands. Dude, my knees and back couldn't take it (old fart), I had to set up the table again.

Got all those bad boys out though. There are 12 of them and they're 13/32 in diameter. The only things I've found so far on these Rockwells that isn't life threatening heavy are the rivets that hold the data tag on....

looks great, im really looking forward to this build. as you said before you probably could have bought a 2wd cc cheaper and just threw the rocks under it, but what fun would that be. why don't you just run lift springs all around?

Thanks for following the thread my friend.

You're right, I could break out the check book and put lifted springs on all 4 corners and call it good. Fact is, I found a set of 4" lift 56s on Craigslist for the front which would have been all I needed (I may still go that route) but the more I get into this build, the more I want to show how inexpensive it can be done. I've spent the last 2 days mocking up and drawing my idea of GM Brakes on the rear axle. I'll be sending the drawings to my son Monday. I'll try to get to the front axle in a few days. I also have my idea of a cheaper/easier shackle flip. So my lift is probably going to be dropped spring brackets, stock 56" springs, shackle flips and so on. Again, work that the clever/resourceful guy can do on his own with inexpensive parts he sources himself (If he doesn't already have them) without having to pay through the nose for store bought kits.

We'll see.

that would work too (dropped spring brackets and the 4" lift springs). you could even throw a zero rate in there and maybe do longer shackles or higher spring perches on the rocks to achieve a little more lift.

Dude! Now that you mention it, I think I recognize YOUR truck. Wasn't it advertised in the Spokane Craigslist as a 1978 3/4 Ton Crew Cab? If it is, we had a short email dialog going. I came this close to coming out there to check it out.
