Ok, I know you don't necessarily want 4.10s and I said that as a joke.
But your comments about a 305 not having the rpm to turn 4.10s doesn't make any sense. At 65 it would only be 2500ish rpm.
23ish at 55. That's a reasonable rpm for cruising. Might actually not feel so 305ish at those rpms.

Good thing is the R4 is cable driven, right?

There's a couple things involved in my decision.

1. I'm honestly not upset with how it runs with 2.73s. Again, it's a cruiser. I'm not trying to beat up on Coyotes or LSs between stoplights.

2. The thing gets 28mpg at 75mph with the A/C running as it sits. That's better than my wife can get out of her 2013 2.5L Malibu (driving style).

3. We helped a guy with a WS6 Trans-Am for a bit. Going from his 3.42s to 4.10s cost him almost a second at the track because his 5500rpm LT1 didn't have a wide enough power band to handle that 3.06 first gear and 4.10s. He was doing a 1-2 shift almost immediately and the 4L60/700R4 1-2 shift is pretty broad. The LT1 has almost double my HP and nearly 1000RPM higher redline.

From my experiences and what I'm expecting out of the car, I just feel like the 3.23s are a good compromise for economy, performance and comfort.

I appreciate yalls input on it, and if I was building something to turn laps or primarily race, it would be 3.42 or 3.73 and then engine mods to match. I think a mild converter and 3.23s will provide me the boost in performance I'm looking for without compromising the intended purpose of the car.

Ws6 dude had something set up wrong in the ECM. I ran a 4.56 gear set in my old LT1 Camaro. It had zero issues getting out of it own way. Set up the shift point at 6200

Hot rods and fuel mileage.
A phase that's never been spoken before.
I'll shut up now.

Now having said that, 3.23 is a pretty decent gear overall if you drive it on the highway at all. Current LT1 car gets 28mpg driving it 75. I’d like some more gear, but I don’t wanna mess with redoing the ECM for it just yet

Might be the rpm limitations are in the TBI. One thing at a time

My appointment to get it tagged is coming up soon.

Also gotta get the AC fixed soon.

I found a L98. Think I'm going to get it tomorrow. I don't know what I'm thinking....

Actually would be a pretty drastic step up from a 305 tbi. TPI engines make good torque for their displacement

I dunno, even the 4.3 of that era would probably do the same work

Isnt the bottleneck on the 5.0 l the fact that the valves are shrouded because of the narrow cylinder - causing weak head flow?

A 4.3 has the same bore as a 350 if memory serves and would allow bigger valves and better flow as a result..?

L98=230hp
Turbo 4.3 from typhoon = 280

I'd take the 4.3 too...

Imho, just get it going and on the road. Do all the cheap and easy stuff. HO air cleaner, injector pod spacer, advance the timing to ~10° btdc and put better exhaust on it that sounds good. When they are tuned well, they are still fun to drive. If you still want more, then go for it.

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. But it's hard to pass up a roller cam 350 block. The wife did bring up where I would store it. "The bedroom?" was the wrong answer.

I've been doing some reading tonight.

Using DD2000, with factory 187 heads I could get just shy of 300hp from my 305 with a good intake, 670cfm throttle body, headers and the 5.7L Vortec L31 cam.

Add 305 Vortec heads to the mix and I'm knocking on the door of 330hp.

I realize these are probably not super accurate numbers, but it's really something to consider. Just toss find someone with a L31 or LT1 cam and do a good aftermarket dual plane intake. Then start learning to tune the ecm.

Check your ECM. Many tbi are not tunable, you’d have to do a chip. Later years are mem over prom, so you can use a laptop
