1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

I've seen waaay worse cracks on engine that still ran fine. Doesn't surprise me that those are on the rear most cylinders. Which see the coolant at its hottest. I know you can't afford a new waterpump but check the coolant passages for build up of anything that could limit flow.

You could also swap the sides the heads were installed. It would put the cracked ends at the front of the engine where it's coolest.

Cast iron can be tigged but it requires a bit of an involved process. Have to preheat, use a specific filler rod, postheat and have to watch how fast it cools. It's doable but a fair amount of work to.

Most crack repair I have ever seen is high nickle smaw with long pre and post heats.

This is a decent idea (be sure to switch the temp sensor over, it's easier on the bench). FWIW, when I ripped my 6.5 apart it was cracked between every pair of valves. I wouldn't hold it up as a wonderful engine (I ripped it apart because of milkshake in the oil pan), but my local head shop told me not to worry about them. They said that these heads often do that without causing issues. :dunno:

Stick welding cast is also common method to fix it. For cracks that small tig is much prefered. Pre and post heat cycles are the same for either process.

That is how it goes...
Considering the state of ALL GM engines in the early/mid 1980's, I don't consider the 6.2 bad at all.

I didn't call the 6.2 a bad engine.

I said it would have been a better engine had Chevrolet not cheapened up multiple aspects of the engine.

Yep a couple of changes and the 6.2 would have been known for durability and good milage. But no matter. My other 6.5 is the 599 block which is supposed to be the best block. If I ever go full rebuild I'll use that one and buy the improved head.

Made slight progress. Head wasn't feeling to awesome today. Usually after a weekend like we had I'm down for a day or two. Hoping to get everything else cleaned and painted in the next couple days

So does opening a box that parts came in count as progress?

If so I made progress tonight.

If not well.....well.........if not screw you guys I'm counting it as progressing. :saweet:
