1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

Got the front axle in. Shocks were a bear to get off but the u bolts zipped right off. PB blaster is awesome.

Got the suction hose replaced and I don't think I have anymore leaks, good grief that upper hose clamp on the steel line is hard to get to. Just need a couple more years and I will be able to have Bailey do that kind of stuff.

Man I need new shocks. The shocks themselves aren't worn out but the bushing are hard as a rock. So going to go to the local auto parts store to see if their bushings will fit or not. If not I suppose I will order some.

New axle has a dropped drag link and a raised steering arm with a block, need to take the block out and I should be able to use the rest of it, which is nice because both of the DLE on the old drag link were hammered.

Gotta switch out the hubs and check wheel bearings and probably brakes.

So no working on it today, the plan today is take a nap with the baby and then work very late tonight :D

Oh how plans go awry.

Finally got steering in. Good greif I broke 2 hammers and one stud. Finally got them off by getting a good weld on one and backing it out. The other I couldn't seem to get a decent weld on tried a couple times, so just hit the cone washer with the air hammer for about 45 minutes, it finally started turning. out it comes. You would think by now that the 3rd cone washer would come out rather easy. Oh no. took 40 more minutes of hammering. Ridiculous. Anyway both steering arms off and the new stuff on the axle

Another thing I did today, I had dual shocks on this. They are pro comp es 3000s, so just slightly better than complete crap they are just crap. I don't have alot of body roll and the shocks actually seem to be in really good shape other than the bushings.

One thing I have always wondered with these truck is why no manufacturer of lifts has ever put the correct shock on. They all have way to much uptravel and not enough down travel. So looking at my shocks the second shock is longer. So I used just that shock. Mounted in the factory single shop mount spot I have about 2" more of useable downtravel. We will see how it works with just a single shock.

I had one of those superlift drop draglinks, that thing was horrible. Plus once the ends were shot it's a special DLE and you can't find it locally.

I went back to a straight factory draglink when I lowered the truck and it's so much better.

I actually plan on going back to the stock draglink sooner than later but it needs new ends and these ends are solid, so it will only be on there for a month

New axles are in wow 3.08s to 4.56s what a difference:D

So being that I needed the Jimmy back in working order the new axles went in as is.

Tonight drove it to a buddys house to watch the Packers game and then the Saints game. I knew something was wrong as it was pulling HARD to the passenger side. Halfway to his house it occurred to me a caliper may be sticking. Yep get to his house and lo and behold the pass. side wheel is HOT.

Well crap. Watch the games and then off to home, this time being very careful. Get home and holy crap, rotor is glowing!!:eek1::eek1::eek1::eek1:

Tried to get a pic of it but the it cooled down too much by the time I get the camera out of the house, tried to snap a pic with my phone but it didn't get it too good

I suppose tomorrow I will be changing out the rotor and calipers and repacking the wheel bearings!

New caliper on haven't driven it yet.

I did take the dual shocks off. I used the single shock that was in the second position in the stock position as it was the longer shock.

Wow what a difference, it rides a thousand times better.

Remember I am used to driving these trucks and drove Horton on the street for a good while and before that my blazer. So it might feel a bit loosey goosey to some, but to me its just right. Smoothed it out big time over the bumps, actually feels like the suspension is working now instead of, well feeling like there were no springs.

In addition they are piece of crap pro comp 3000s. Much better ride now

Sounds like it was a good move. I have never driven one of these with the dual shock option, I can imagine how bad the ride would be with 4 crappy shocks on the front though.

Fun times were had today.

Went over to a buddys Dads house to help him build the adaptor plate for a 1350/1354 doubler on his BII

His Dad has some property and went toodling through the woods.

First time I have really been decently wheeling in the Jimmy, nothing big.

So impressions, man I am so used to more travel I gotta do something about it.

A 6.2,241, and 4.56s with 35s is a great combo off road.

Only pic I really took

Overall its quite a bit of fun wheeling this rig. Can't see anything, no lockers so you really have to plan your lines. Not alot of flex. But the gearing is awesome. With some suspension work, I am thinking coils up front, and 63s in the back, and SF 14 bolt with a selectable locker and some decent muds in a 37 I think I am going to really enjoy this rig

What he said. Keep this one simple and parts store basic.

lol leave it alone and drive it you have a wheeler

I am going to for now Keith but I can never leave well enough alone.

All my junk is parts store basic. Horton has nothing to impressive on it at all.

Sorry guys but this front suspension has got to be changed. For what it would cost me to do tuff country ez rides, I can dang near do links.

It still rides like crap. Most of the goal of the suspension mods will be a better ride.

This is the truck I want to be able to cruise through the mountains with all day long.

Biggest problem with that is my head issues, the smoother it rides off road the better I will feel at the end of a day. Making multi day trips possible, the last multi day trip I went on I did not fare well. Just not really possible for me to drive all day, camp and then drive the next day with as stiff as this thing is

Making a softer suspension was always a goal for me with this truck. I am not going to get crazy but leaf springs suck. Simple as that.

Horton will get linked before I link this one, the crew cab will get done, and I will swap in a 14 b sf before I do much to this one.

Link it with bushing so i can see how it works and do it to my rig!

Well fine then:D

See guys Chris made me do it. LOL

With this truck it will work fine Chris. I am sure I will have to replace the bushings every couple years but like I said I am doing it mostly for the smoother riding coils rather than for max flex.

I still want it to flex decent but the Jimmy spends most of its time on the road.

Do it So links with bushings you would essentially be building radius arm?

maybe i'm just lost.

No two lowers a single upper on this one. So 3 bars total ( not including the panhard) not attached to each other either.

Bushing at the axle end and some type of flex joint or Heim at the frame end of the links.

gotcha... I envisioned it with all bushings.

I acutally might do all bushings, not sure yet.

The whole reason to link the Jimmy is for it to ride nicer. Spends 90% of its time on the road. I would like it to ride nicer off road. Makes my life easier when I get to wherever I am going off road.

I could do it cheap with bushings all the way around. I may not even make the arms adjustable, except for the panhard
