Ugh no progress. I told myself I would get something done every day.
Last night my church had a Daddy daughter date thing.
They made us square dance

I think that was the appropriate priority.
About a year ago, you said something in a thread about doing at least one thing a night on the project at hand, and it will make the task not so daunting. I try my best to follow that, and it really does help. But I have also learned, some nights that doesn't happen. I usually get 2 things done the next night.
I do three days a week after my kid goes to bed. My only problem now is that it has put the weight loss on hold since Im working on stuff. I'll make sure I text you pictures of me working on the 6.6 tonight to motivate you.

I'm not the first to be into this engine it had fel pro head gaskets.
Pretty clean on the inside. I don't know what to look for in a diesel. Can't see any crosshatch on the cylinder walls. Anyway pics

So where do I need to be looking for cracks. No obvious ones yet.

Also I have very minor leakage on a couple of valves. I can't afford machine work or new heads. Valve lapping gonna do it ya think?

Look for the same issues you would look for in a gasser. As for specific things with the 6.x engines. Checks in between the valves for cracks. Little ones are normal and on a standard rebuild I wouldn't be worried about. The block cracks you hear about are in the web sections between the center 3 main caps and the cylinder walls. If you turn the engine upside down, wipe that area of the block clean. Then let it sit at least overnight. IF there are any cracks oil will start to weep out of them. Some cracks are fixable some aren't. If there are any its not the end of the block, just have to check it more. Some blocks crack and still run for thousands of miles, just don't beat on it too hard. If its not cracked, keep that block forever because if it hasn't crack by now it never will.

The tops of the pistons you posted look decent. The head you show, the cylinder to the left of the picture. Where was that on the engine? That cylinder looks like it might not running well as the others.

Seepage from the valves themselves. I didn't do a leak down test and haven't completely disassembled the head
It's minor. The worst one starts seeping in about 3 seconds. I just sprayed brake cleaner in the intake and exhaust ports.
3 intakes and 2 exhausts. With that single being by far the worst.
Just think I'm going to leave em alone. I can't get too deep this is just a spray paint rebuild.

One more thing. How much play should the timing chain have?
I have what seems to be a ton. I can push the chain in more than a 1/4" on each side might be closer to a half inch

As I recall, 1/2" deflection at one side is within the norm and about what I measured on my 300K takeout several years back. I think .75" is the limit. But, this a good opportunity for some relatively inexpensive PM.

Chains are pretty cheap. Suggest you go ahead any replace it. The DSG timing gears are nice, too if you can spring for them.
