1989 Toyota 4Runner

Building the truck my friend won’t be able to
well they look funky, and I can envision the nuts vibrating loose, just enough to still be depressing the schrader valve letting gas leak.

Are they? This stuff is out of my wheel house. The sticker on this truck says R12 but it was empty so no clue.

Yeah some makes and models had r134 earlier than 96, but that was mfg choice. Feds said all by 96

Started the hvac rehab. Replacing foam on the vents. Also got the evaporator coil cleaned out with some foaming cleaner and letting it dry. Tomorrow my plan is to remove the manifold on the compressor and let it drain out any oil there may be in it and then refill it and start reassembling.

be sure to measure the oil drained from the compressor, cross check the amount with any published data you find for that compressor.

Does any oil need to be added in the evaporator? This one has oil in it. I’m assuming it’s just from being blown around in the system.

yes put 1 oz in the evap, 1 oz in the condenser, do you have an accumulator or receiver dryer? I put 2 oz in an accumulator. Been so long since I used a receiver dryer i don't remember if it needs to have oil. The majority of oil will be in the compressor, unless it doesn't have a sump, like the R4 Harrison.

I just checked, yes the dryer needs oil. measure the oil drained from old one. Use a new dryer. All toll you should be 5-6oz of oil in whole system.

That sounds roughly like what I read on the yota forums when converting. And I’ve got a new drier. Just need to install it. Hopefully this covid brain fog lifts after today (although not sure the brisket and beer are gonna help) and I can finish cleaning everything and start assembly tomorrow. Took Thursday and Friday off this week so hopefully by next weekend I’ve got AC in this thing.

Interior portion is done. Going to try and get new o rings for the compressor and then flush the condenser and then add oil and put a vac on it.

Tell me about it. I can't even drop the bottom half of the evap box to try and replace them because there are a pair of screws and a clip on the back side you can't access when it's installed.

Got it all assembled and oiled and put a vac on it. Ran the vac pump for about 20mins before shutting it off and then left to a friends house and 5 hours later it’s still at the exact same reading. Tomorrow I’ll run the vacuum for a while longer and then charge it and see what happens.

Added about 20oz of refrigerant from the searching I did online. Got the compressor to kick on and the air cools off and condensation goes to the garage floor. But for some reason I can’t get a gauge reading using the gauge manifold. Only the gauge on the can of refrigerant. And the high idle isn’t working so the engine bogs.

the manifold gauge set you are using is an amazon special ? Might need to open the valves to get a reading. I don't care for this style nor do I trust the readings.
