Best to purge the pressure before trying to remove the filter. Just disconnect the wire to the fuel pump and try to start the engine and also remove the gas cap. Once you've done that and you've got the filter off make sure the O-rings on the fuel lines are still good and not cut or destroyed before installing the new fuel filter.
Remember to re-connect the fuel pump wire and put the gas cap back on before trying to start the engine.
