1990 350 motor

Is there any tips to replacing it? Anything I don't want to do or anythign I should be aware of?

Best to purge the pressure before trying to remove the filter. Just disconnect the wire to the fuel pump and try to start the engine and also remove the gas cap. Once you've done that and you've got the filter off make sure the O-rings on the fuel lines are still good and not cut or destroyed before installing the new fuel filter.

Remember to re-connect the fuel pump wire and put the gas cap back on before trying to start the engine.

Have you replaced the CAT yet? Those can get plugged and rob all your power. If you haven't already replaced it get yourself a hi-flow cat and have it put it.

I'll second that one too. My old K5 seemed a bit more sluggish than it should. I could tell the power was there, but it just wasn't getting to the wheels (if that makes sense). I could feel the motor working, and the rpm's building etc, but I just didn't feel it in the vehicles response.. or in the seat of my pants. What I was feeling and hearing just wasn't adding up to what I was getting. So, I took a chance and changed out the cat. HUGE difference. The 50.00 bucks or so I spent, was probably one of the biggest gains I ever made. It didn't make it a strip burner.. but you could feel the difference. It had much more "pep" driving around.. and the WOT feel matched what the engine was telling me.

Paper towels,,,lots of them, even with the pressure released, fuel will still want to come out,,,you have to be somewhat quick with replacing it.

Thats how my truck feels. You can tell the engine is working, it revs up to high rpms but takes forever to do it.

I can't even spin the tires with 4:10 gears and 33" tires from a stop. :/

good way to burn out a transmission REAL quick in these big heavy trucks...

Honestly, it sounds to me like you are more concerned about spinning your tires here, it's a truck, not a Corvette, get the motor running right, to where it SHOULD be for a truck, and don't worry about spinning your tires,,,,,,,

The only reason I'm worried about it is because the truck can't :P. If it could, I wouldn't do it. But it tells me something is wrong with it :P. It seems like it takes so long for the power to actually get to the wheels.

You have already been given several ideas as to what to check, to see if there is a problem going on, i suggest you check or replace any bad components and go from there...

If you really want to tear up tires, i would suggest you install some 5.13 gears and keep the 33"tires, that'll surely work. But then we will surely see you back on here complaining about poor fuel mileage, so that may not be a great idea either...:doah:

Guess i have just outgrown the need to burn up a $200 tire just because it can, or for show. i dunno :p:

I'm replacing the fuel filter today and I'll go try and find a new high flo cat to put on. The problem is if that car feels really slow to accelerate with 33" tires, how will it do when I put the 35's or 36's that I want to put on it. I don't want to go WOT all the time but my truck feels so slow but sounds like it should actually be going somewhere.

Instead of worrying that something needs to be upgraded, why don't you take all these good folks' advice and do a little preventative maintenance??? Here's my list. Go through it and report back to us what you found. I'm willing to bet one of these is the cause of your performance woes:

- Replace your fuel filter

- Check your cat

- Replace your plugs/wires/rotor

- Check and adjust your base timing

- Check your injector spray pattern

- Make sure your front calipers/e-brake cable aren't seizing up

- Make sure your TV cable is properly adjusted

Once you can tell us for certain that all the above is taken care of, maybe we can delve further into things for you. But remember, first and foremost, that these are 5000 pound trucks. They are not racecars.

Plugs, wires, and rotors are brand new.
Front calipers aren't seizing up.
I'll replace the cat and fuel filter tonight or tomorrow.
How do I check the timing and injector spray pattern? I don't have a timing light. :/

Your timing really shouldn't be an issue, unless you have moved your distributor excessivly, it's controlled by the computer anyways...

try replacing that fuel filter, first, then test drive it, may be the only problem,,,if that doesn't work, then i would say eliminate the Cat just for testing purposes, if it gets extremely better without it, then replace it with a new one.

Don't go replacing parts that cost some decent cash if you are not 100% sure they are bad, filters and such are items that need replacing often anyways, and are fairly simple to change.

Your injector spray pattern, just by looking at it, should be a somewhat powerful, conical pattern/shape, not sporadic and weak looking, no drips either.

I really don't want to sound rude, brother, but you've been given tons of guidance in this thread. The proper thing to do now would be to use the search function and spend some time learning about this on your own time.

We love helping, but when it comes to basic stuff like this, you need to educate yourself sooner or later.

Can Man - I gotta agree this is mostly basic stuff, but I did pick up a couple of pointers along the way that will help with my truck. We also get alot of nOOb questions about driveability issues. How about some sort of sticky with the information in this thread and other driveability fixes for quick reviews and to point new chevy folks to?

If you can't get this thing squared away get it here to fremont and i'll help you sort it out. There are a couple people closer to you that might be able to help but i'm willing to lend a hand if needed.
