rderosier submitted a new Build:

1990 "James" 5.3 Jimmy

View attachment 308543 I bought this about 5 years ago from a friend of the family. It was sitting in a field when I came across it but it fired up and I drove it home.
Previous owner had made a few changes, 6" superlift, Dana 44 front, 14 bolt semi float in the rear and it was sitting on 33's. I don't have a pic on 33s but this is basically how it stood when I got it.

I was never really sure what the ultimate plan was for it, but my wife and I both had a soft spot for squares and like doing some offroading in the mountains.

First thing I did was put 35s on it, 33s were way too small.

Over the years I've made some small upgrades I picked up a soft top and basic roll bar for cheap from a guy parting out a K5. Put in a suburban third row seat since removing the top removed the seat belts. Wife bought me an a-bomb bumper, put a lock rite in the rear.

This last year has kinda ramped up my desire to build it better I guess, started with a crammed 5.3/4l60e swap which is done.

Here's basically how it sits today

I just picked up a donor suburban off a former member here for its Dana 60 and 14 bolt. Which came with a lot of extras that have me trying to make some decisions on where to go next.

Read more about this build here...

As mentioned in the front post, I picked up a donor 1990 suburban that has a Dana 60 w/ yukon 35 spline inners and outers and a lock rite as well as a 14 bolt FF with a detroit, both 4:56.
It's got a fairly recently rebuilt 350 which is cammed and bored .30 over (which i obviously don't need) as well as a TH350 with manual valve body and reverse shift pattern, again, I don't need or want.

Came with brand new 52" 2.5 lift springs which I think I'll run in the front, rear has 2.5 lift springs with 4" ORD shackle flip which I'll probably also switch over.

Setup for full hydro but I prefer to drive it on the street sometimes so I'm going to switch to crossover with hydro assist.

Gets a little tricky from here, it has a first gen 203/205 doubler which I had planned on just selling but i'm flip-flopping on running it behind the 4l60e, opinions?

Hey there Colorado!

Let’s talk 4L60e with that Doubler

Hey fellow Colorado.
I'd love to hear opinions...Triple stick doubler too.

Also got a really great deal on this today

How good of a deal?

Check the condition of that rag joint too

Rag joint doesn't really matter, I have an xj shaft all ready to go in. I appreciate the input though.
Were you having second thoughts on the Doubler, or?

My concern would be, doesn’t the ECM need the output for the VSS?

It does, but looks like this adapter that takes the 4l60e down to 4 bolts here:
https://www.advanceadapters.com/pro...5e-4-speed-automatic-transmissionadapter-kit/

Seems to take care of the VSS as well, though on my current setup the VSS is on the transfer case tailshaft, not sure it makes a difference. Looks like ORD will machine the tail housing on the Np205 to accept VSS as well.

Also I can't find many resources on running a doubler behind a 4l60e which made me wonder if it's a bad idea for some reason. I guess the lack of information makes me hesitate.

I know a lot of it is that most guys are running 32 spline input, so 465/th400/NV4500/4L80e

There are concerns over the durability of a 4L60 in heavy trucks. Seems a correctly built one may hold up fine. Our resident 4L60 abuser @Babaganoosh will be along shortly

Hmm. The doubler is behind a th350 currently so I just assumed it's a 27 spline. I guess I should pull it and check before I get all deep in thought about running it.

Guess that's a secondary concern, do I invest money adapting it to a transmission that might just blow up in front of it?

That's true with any trans.

I'm a fan of the 4l60e, it works and the first gear is awesome. Yes it isn't as strong as a 4l80e, if it wouldn't cost so much I would have one in my truck. I currently have a heavily modified built 4l60e in my truck and I'm not afraid to beat on it.

Almost feels like cheating plasma cutting rivets off after doing all the front brackets/engine crossmember with a grinder and brute force
