1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

If the axle is not straight. Could i get it straight, and then truss it?
If you can get it straight at home yeh. If you have to have someone else straighten it, might be cheaper to get another used diff.

No just the factory g80. I really dont have much time to go hunt down another diff. Unless i just found one online That was perfect. But around here that isnt usually an option...:doah:
 
Im going to open it up and make sure its not bent enough to be doing damage inside... If it is its gotta go clearly. If its not. Could i truss it so it doesnt get any worse and will last another year before finding a new one? I wouldnt wheel it or anything?
 
Get some beer cans out. Also, I recall seeing a 6 lug 14 when we were out at Buck's on the weekend.

Or come over like you did and put my anxiety ridden brain to rest about it. No more carpentry eye on this thing. Nothings straight and dont measure off anything as if its straight :)!

Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. I can re-iterate that a K5 is pretty far from a kitchen cabinet when it comes to square, flat, straight, true etc...

At any rate as best I can see using my 48" level your diff is straight to within .06" which is probably the tolerance used when it was new.

Its never really gone straight, but I'm sure thats at the steering box / wheel not being perfectly set.

Dumb question, does your phone have a level function?
If so, all you have to do is set it on each axle tube side, see if it is the same
 
I did some discovery work as i took this apart and kept what i could to recreate. I didnt get around to finish cutting it out , but i have this much done, in prep for the long weekend i have ahead of rust repair. I have to cut, fab, and patch fab up some structural stuff before i start making pannels for the floor. As well as finish cutting this out square and up to the factory ovelaps, to try and make it as factory as possible.I picked up some 14g steel for patches. I wire brushed what i could of the structural support and por 15'd it.

Nick and I talked...I think he'll be fine. Hell, my 81 Jimmy at the end I had 3" of twist/bend in the frame. It had been jumped, rolled, rear ended by a drunk at better than 50 mph, and was still my DD. In comparison Nick's is a museum piece.
 
I wasn't too worried about it. But I was also hoping that he is not like me and sit up all night over thinking crap
 
I've been giving Nick some pointers, and then leaving him be to figure shit out. The best way to learn is to dive in and do it yourself...with some advice. The corner pictured is close to where it needs to be before new steel gets welded in. There is just a little more to remove, and a little bit of structure to repair. He's totally on the right track and learning a ton. I'm blocks away if he needs me there...
