I try to follow all the builds i can learn from ( which is wayyy too maaaany ) but some move too fast for me

That one in particular the last week or so has been sheet metal repair heavy. Very good read

I wasn't too worried about it. But I was also hoping that he is not like me and sit up all night over thinking crap

I overthink everything.... I also have ALOT riding on this rig right now.. like my whole plans of moving, so its anxiety central!

I've been giving Nick some pointers, and then leaving him be to figure shit out. The best way to learn is to dive in and do it yourself...with some advice. The corner pictured is close to where it needs to be before new steel gets welded in. There is just a little more to remove, and a little bit of structure to repair. He's totally on the right track and learning a ton. I'm blocks away if he needs me there...

Its great to have someone tell you things, but not spoil the fun and learning process by them doing it for you / telling you exactly what to do. For what its worth i do find it enjoyable to do so far.
 
hopefully the fun lasts slightly longer than it takes to patch the rust...:D

Definitely some gems and great welding advice going on, thanks for the reminder to check out that thread. Its come quite a ways from the last time i caught up on it
 
I got some work done on this rust repair this weekend. I bought a 4x3 sheet, of 14G steel... I took my time, and on top of that, it all took me awhile to do. Being that I have no real clue what I'm doing with this flux welder, and steel.... I got to work!! Im going to try and make this work with all the random photos i have. Any welds that have holes have been filled after the photo, but its the best photo i have...

I removed the factory seat belt anchor with a spot weld cutter and cleaned it up.

The original backing i was going to use for the floor piece overlap near the corner, where the rear seat is located, Was too thin so i decided to cut it back and weld on a new piece. I then had to try and recreate the piece of structural steel , that attaches to the horizontal floor mount brace. Once that was done i started to form the floor piece.. that factory mould was hard to get perfect, but i got it close enough for my satisfaction. I have to do it again on the other side anyway.

I marked out all the spot welds to drill and started to get it in place. Tacking all the spot welds first.. The top lip in front of the wheel well, was another factory overlap in sheet metal that was too rotten to use so i made a little piece so the top layer along the cab wall, has some good backing to lay on. I then started to make the top sheet piece that tucks behind and goes along the wall.

After the top was welded into place. I started to mark out where the seat belt anchor was located in the stock piece. Once i had it marked out i welded the anchor to the new side sheet, and welded it in place. Its by far not the prettiest thing in the world but its solid and rust free. And thats whats important to me. Im sure ill keep learning how to weld better as these corners go on.. and on.. covered it up with seam sealer and letting it all dry over night. Going to por -15 and rock guard or something over it.

Yea I'm hoping by the time i have all four corners done, i should get the hang of it more hopefully. Almost splurged on a MIG welder the other day but definitely not in the budget, or needs really. This works fine for what I'm doing. But a MIG machine is in the future for sure before tackling other stuff.
 
Getting that flux core stuff to look any much better is pretty damn hard. It's just an ugly process, I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. The important thing I see is fully welded, you paid attention to structure and built it back up layer by layer like the factory did. That is currently the strongest section of floor/body on your truck...and that's all on you, by yourself as your first welding project. Take a bow, pat yourself on the back and have a well earned beer! :saweet:

Ah, don't fuss. Like Rene said, that's the strong corner now. Just make sure to cover it well so rust won't get it
 
I saw seam sealer and POR 15 there among other things. That and the fact he used steel twice as thick as stock...it should be good for a while!
 
i definitely think ill get a smaller gauge next time, just for the ease of molding it. Seam sealer is on overnight, ill por 15 next, and rock guard over it:

Anti spatter spray.

Won't help the weld but it will help the overall look and save time. Cause the spatter just brushes off.

Rene is right but even more so on sheet metal. Flux core be ugly

Maybe ill go get some this weekend for the next spot and see if it helps cut some grinding time down or not. I notice lots if little spatter shit all over the steel after. Its nice to learn with something that isnt so easy though. so when i finislly upgrade to MIG itll be that much easier to work with
