1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

Good work.

That patch looks really familiar.

Thanks, im thinking of getting some big mud flaps or thickers rubber and making a stencil. Potentially covering up this area, so the dirt and rocks dont fly off the rear tire and hammer this spot. Im assuming thats why its such a common rust area. Something held in with a couple screws maybe for easy removal when doing any work behind it

Looks good to me.

Martin

Thanks! i was really unsure about what i was doing when i started , but i didnt rush and the outcome was good.

I did almost the exact same patch.

I just put like 7 coats of undercoating on the bottom and it seems to be holding up well.

Yea por 15 and about the same of some undercoating, should keep it tidy for another 6-7 years until i re do it again lol. Itll be nice once i move there is no more snow... Jus kinda rains alot. But oh well, no more snow and ice buildups will be good for the rust

Looks good dude. I took the easy way out and did a cab swap :D

If i could find a rust free tub around here i would love to just do it and fix it all at once. Just sucks that DOESNT EXIST lol.. You had rusted out rockers, and stuff too though. Mine are okay for now. Once i get these 4 areas done inside the cab, it'll be ok for awhile. The taipan and rockers are next to go and i have bondo all lumped over my rear quarters. It should be enough time between each section needing to be replaced, that i shouldn't get too overwhelmed. These rear two areas will take a good chunk off of my worry for now.

Check my thread out about how I did my tailpan. That was the strongest part of the truck.

I vaguely remember from reading through your build, ill take another look. It'll probably be good for another 2 years and then ill tackle it its rusting but its still supporting the tailgate when its down haha, all depends on when i get space again really. Rust repairs decently cheap, i like it !

YEah, basically what I used was a piece of 2x4 and welded the hinges and everything to that.

Yea i will definitely take some pointers from your thread when i go to do it. Id love to tackle it now but i dont know if ill have the time. This will be my DD soon

Finally cleaned out all the muddy water from the engine bay. No more mud:doah:i still need to find a air conditioning line that goes from the canister to the compressor. Managed to find a square in the junkyard but its a mid eighties and they arent the same.

Mud is fun though!

i know... ugh.. And where I'm moving is a wet coast so there probably will be plenty... atleast no water will be spraying me in the face from the rust hole by my feet:bow:

Has anyone changed the pinion seal on 14 SF? The shop that installed my gears in the 10 bolt, also "looked" at the 14 bolt and replaced the pinion seal. Well its still leaking so i called the shop and they keep saying they will call me back and don't.. I'm going to go down there in person but if that fails.. Im wondering if i could do it myself? I've read that guys count the threads and mark the nut and all that but guys advise against doing it yourself? Wondering what the guys on here think if they have ever done it themselves.

I know these threads aren't supposed to get off topic much but i just received news that a coworker/friend died from his injuries after he was in an accident on his harley that occurred last week. I just wanted to remind everyone how important it is to be careful on your bike for those who ride, and how important it is for us who don't to be aware of them on the road and give them the space and respect they deserve

Sorry to hear this

Seal isn't to bad.
But new seals leak for a reason. Either the pinion bearing is bad. Or either the seal got clipped on install, possibly a groove worn on the yoke allowed the seal to leak

its a sad day for sure. Just wanted to remind guys to be careful as i know there are riders on here.

Rene did mention that to me. Im mad because i told them to check out the entire diff as it was just pulled from max02s place, and they said it was all good. I'm hoping they damaged the seal or something and not the yoke. Would the yoke be fixable or would i have to get a new one..? i really can't afford another shop visit. The first one nearly killed me for what they did lol
