1991 Chevy Crew Cab "R" / "V" Conversion

Started working on a rear bumper, had some 2"x6"x1/4" laying around. Got the bumper mocked and tacked up, need to figure out a tire carrier setup with a swing out that can handle the 400lbs tire/wheel. Open to recommendation for swing outs!

Diy4x has a swing out spindle that will handle that.

Basically it was a essentialy a half ton pickup front spindle and hub with all the BS removed. Leaving the main Spindle and a round sleeve to weld whatever you want on to it.

I have seen a few of that style and I am sure they are plenty strong but I am currently looking at double shear style for added piecenof kind. Unless there is a spindle type out there made from a Rockwell!
 
The front spindle and hub of a half ton truck takes about 2000 times more force on a daily basis than your tire swing out will in it's entire lifetime lol.

Same with a weld in trailer spindle. Which is probably cheaper and easier.
The ones rated for a 5000# trailer can take a side load of 2500# all day. They won't break till WAY over that.
If you have a latch on the other side that helps support the swing out some when closed, then even hitting hard bumps you'd never see half that force on the spindle.
 
Trailer spindle design has issues with the common 35-37" size tires, the leverage the tire gets while bouncing around is impressive. Dealing with at least 3 times the weight here and if 35-37" tires need a spindle from a 7k rated trailer axle to survive, looking at spindles from a class 8 commercial truck/trailer to survive.

Easiest would be a spare tire carrier from a military 5 ton but it doesn't swing out for easy access. Uses a crane to raise/lower the tire then sets it down on a rack that it gets bolted to. Look at pictures of a M931 tractor.

Rather than a swing out why not a swing down? Makes use of the spare tire as a step to get into the rear cargo area, and much easier to mount/dismount the tire on the carrier. Take the spare tire carrier from a m35a2 deuce and a half and put it on a hinge so it can be pivoted upright when driving. Will need an assist of some type to lift and lower at the hinge.
