2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
So...timing is everything, eh? I was looking through my empty engine bay tonight and found the main power wire feeding the fuse block had torn off the starter lug. So...I'm going to be taking that circuit apart anyway. And the wire has seen better days. And access is super easy right now...

1/0 wire isn't as pricey as I had been thinking, either. The main wire is only 5 feet or so. The crossover wire is about 7 feet.

I went out and took some actual measurements. Main starter wire is about 5 feet, crossover wire is also 5 feet (I forgot it's not going across the full width of the truck, just from battery to battery). The two ground wires are 2.5' each, so an even 15 feet of wire should replace all four segments with a few inches to spare. $43 shipped for 1/0 AWG pure copper wire, plus a few bucks for new connectors. And 40 pounds of solder. :wink1:

This sounds very doable.

Got the wiring put back in after work. Fired up after a few seconds of cranking. It definitely turned over faster. And it’s charging right where it should be.

I like the extended oil fill spout.

The things you never even notice until you see a better way to build a mousetrap...

And what is this "Park" that I see written below your gauges? That's just crazy talk. :rotfl:

And that's not even mentioning the ABS light. I would have thought you threw that lightbulb away months ago. :wink1:

Don't you already have the rings on the axle? And you just need to mount up sensors? Or is it more than that?

I haven’t looked into doing it to the 99-04 axles but I know on the 05+ 60’s the ford sensors work for the GM abs system. Greg will get it figured out just fine

The sensor is just a pulse reader counting flashes. And no company owns a monopoly on that technology. At worst it's a chance to practice his new soldering skills.

The sensors are there, they are mounted in the unit bearing. So it may be as simple as splicing the wires. I just need to find a way to make it to where I can unplug it.

WFO makes a plug and play harness for that but I think it's for GMT800's. Might be worth looking into.

The trick is the number of pulses and type of sensor. Is it Hall effect or just plain old mag pickup. I’m full aware of how speed sensors work, I have the joy of working on them more than I’d like

I put 05+ axles in 99-04s and use the old sensor in the new unit bearing. Work well and I believe the tooth count difference is too small to be detected.
