2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
OH, those don't leave my house. That's all work related. As for the porch, watch out for the meanest wiener dogs you've ever seen!!!

Sorry if this was already covered....what axle and springs are you going to use up front?

Springs are just factory 1 ton 47's. 4 leaf pack.

Axle is a Super Duty 60 99-04.

I talked with Stephen about some ORD springs, and we decided the best route to go was get the truck built on the factory springs. Then we can get better measurements and weight.

Starting fitting some brackets tonight, and the first one I slide up onto the frame has some clearance issues. Paging @Stephen ....

I'm thinking maybe an aftermarket exhaust system may have more clearance there? Maybe not? Not sure how those systems work right in that area.

Jez it iz. I guess this swap will hold off a bit till exhaust can be addressed. Sounds like a paint job is coming up soon then.

So the swap is on hold for a bit. Only have so much $$$ left to finish, and it won't be enough. I don't want to get almost done, then leave the truck apart and not be able to use it.

So, on to the paint process.

Ordered a cowl hood today since the one that's on there is pretty beat up from the latch sticking. Also ordered some paint/primer/and clear. Going to stick with the factory white for now. Least amount of time involved, and the most cost effective.

The plan is to paint the bed one weekend, and the cab the next. Will be starting in a few weeks. Then pause to recoup some monies to finish up the sfa swap.

Need some 6.5 guru help.

Having an issue with long starts after the truck sits for about 30-60min. A large cloud of black smoke erupts directly after the long start. I was also having an issue starting it in cold(er) weather. I replaced the glow plugs, kinda. I replaced them all but the one behind the turbo. I figured with 7 of 8 gp's working, I shouldn't have that much of a starting issue. Please let me know if I am way incorrect.

Paging @AgDieseler @campfire @longbedder @blazin

Generally, 7 of 8 healthy plugs is enough to start without a struggle. I've done it with 5, but not easily. Grayish smoke would be indicative of a low performing set of plugs A big cloud of black indicates that you're getting fuel during time you're spinning the engine. I'm thinking more fuel related: lift pump, filter, injection pump, injectors.

What is the status and condition of these components? Is the hard start the same as when it sits overnight?

I can here the lift pump working. Just replaced fuel filter on Saturday. IP is only about 20k miles old, I was told. I'm sure injectors are orig, as the GP controller was.

I was also thinking a fuel issue. Being the injectors are more than likely orig. What's a good route to go for replacements?

I use M&D Distributors in Dallas. Picked up a set of new short bodies a coupe of years ago for about $75ea. Kennedy Diesel is a very reliable source for quality parts.

How many miles on your current set of injectors? My experience is that they're functional but ineffecient beyond 125k.
