The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
And while we're at it, I'm sure you know that the lower plates make great salt collectors, right? :doah:
Due to the casting on the drivers side, I have to go this route. There are very large drain holes in the plates. I will be washing the quite well every time she takes a bath.

The good news is that you don't see much salt in your region. And even in salty Michigan, there are 20 year old trucks that haven't...quite...rusted through their original U-bolts yet. The bolts will probably outlast the truck down there. :thumb:
 
There must be a tech article somewhere that explains why a U-bolt is correct here and bolts are not.
 
you should be running a little plate on top that ford used and square bend ubolts that drop down over the leafs .

but with your funky setup I know custom is the way you had to go .

and you can use bolts in place of ubolts . . . most don't tho cause the length of the bolts would be so long and price per bolt = crazy money .

a good 5/8" or 3/4" bolt will be more than needed .
 
I would ditch the nylocks.

Turn the bolt over if you can. Use high strength double thick washers top and bottom and use a proper double nut like a normal u bolt does
 
Just go buy the ferd stuff and do it that way. If you get some upper u-bolt plates at the scrap yard they are also your lower shock mounts so one less thing to fab.
 
Nothing wrong with the bolts, but Eric is right Nylocks need to go away.
 
they suck to begin with on road used stuff. and a suspension point = real bad when they let go .

get a metal crimp nut AKA stover nut or fine thread bolts and the ubolt duplex long nuts as another member stated .

what you have is ok for mockup I would just never run it on the street. seen way to many cheep a$$ lift kits with nylock nuts on cheep ubolts backoff and cause problems.
 
Haha no. No ball game. Got it drivable Friday night. Then went straight to work duties, involuntary of course. Truck drives great. A little rough, but I am hoping the springs soften up a bit still.
 
So how about some real updates.

Thursday night my buddy decided to show up at 9pm to work on the truck. So we worked until 11:30 and finished up the brakes and properly secured the suspension down. Friday was spent finishing up steering and bleeding brakes. Then off for a short road test.

Saturday morning I double checked all the suspension and bolts and made sure everything was tight. Then was headed off to my buddies house to make some shock hoops, and put a slight bend in the drag link we had to make. Until the wife came out and informed me her friend needed her kayaks back that she had borrowed. Loaded those up to to take them to her on what was supposed to be a short drive. I ended up getting bad directions and drove around for almost an hour trying to find the place. Once found we headed to my buddies to start on the hoops.

How did the steering and brakes turn out or did I miss that part?
The brakes work awesome. The Ferd brakes are dual piston, so the stopping power has increased and feels great.

The steering works awesome too. I will get a better picture tomorrow, but I had to ditch the Ferd drag link and make my own.
