2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
...the downside to having the computer do it is you are still relying on the vacuum pump to function correctly.
Yep. Wastegate is vacuum controlled, so depending on your perspective that might be undesirable.

Bailing wire works, too.

I've seen that done, but I don't personally like the idea of bypassing the waste gate functionality. It just doesn't make much sense to me, especially since these engines aren't great at containing high boost pressures.

One of the 6.5s I worked on had a cobbled-together spring on the waste gate. This wasn't a great system either, as the spring was long enough that it wrapped around the plastic intake pipe. :doah: But it did keep the boost regulated, and it was pretty simple to adjust the set point.

Depends on who does the bailing wire job. As that was how my 6.5 was when I bought it. Only it was terrible and made t worse

Though there was several different gm turbos they weren't really all that different from each other. They have a small exhaust housing which allows them to spool up super quick which is awesome for around town but not so great when towing on the highway. You can use an intercooler with the gm series turbos but they're still only good to about 15lbs of boost before becoming grossly inefficient. The biggest issue become the amount of back pressure they make, it's about 2-1 of what boost you're running. Which makes the engine work harder since it has to overcome that back pressure.

I'm going to be swapping a true hx-40 turbo onto mine which will greatly improve towing and just overall performance. Course my engine is far from stock internally but it's a good turbo for even stock engines. Now one turbo that is popular for towing heavy with the 6.5 is called the A-team turbo, yes that's it's actual name. ateamturbo.com It's a little pricy at $800 and to unlock it's full potential a tune is really needed. But it's a direct bolt on setup and no intercooler is needed. From what I've read most that have and tow a lot seem to love it. If you check out thetruckstop.us there's a bunch of folks doing some crazy stuff with the 6.5s.

I've heard of the A-team. Was reading on it about a year ago. Seems almost exactly what I am trying to achieve. I may just try to make this all work as best as possible, and go from there.

The 1998 C3500HD I bought and gave to dad has the bailing wire "manual waste gate controller" option and I can attest that it does seem to get with the program. I really need to get the waste gate back to normal operation before we blow the heads off hauling hay with it.

I've heard/seen guys talk about doing something like this. Pull the top half off of the vacuum actuator and use some flat stock, all thread, and a wing nut to make a manual adjustable deal.

I have seen that exact deal, couple springs from the hardware store and you can fine tune it to your liking

Remind me next time I head down South to take a picture of the wrap-around spring that Dad has. It's definitely a baling wire solution.

And I'm gonna call you out, @78K30, as you should know good and well that there's no such thing as bailing wire, nor have you ever seen a hay bail. Hay does not bail anything, remember that if you ever find yourself in jail or on a sinking boat. Or in a sinking boat-jail. :wink1: I can excuse David's error given the little bit that I know about his background. But I also know a little bit about your background, and such agricultural grammar abuse is not acceptable from an Iowan farm kid. :deal:

:pimp:  :haha:

Thanks dude.

Did you get yours going yet? You ida-hoe...

No, I have it ready to put on the trailer to take out to ID next weekend....I have some plans with Team 208 Motorsports to get some assistance in getting it running once I get out there...so hopefully soon after we get to ID it will be running

I'm just a city boy who went to an ag school for engineering.

And that's why I'm not surprised at your cornfusion, lots of people mix those words up. But for James-the-farmer to mess that up in the same post that he's talking about hauling hay...that's too much for me to overlook.

So since I have been regularly driving this, I have came up with a list of things it's that I want to address besides the never ending list of upgrades.

1. The truck has a fair amount of bump steer I'd like to address. (I'm open ears for pointers)

B. The springs are a little too stiff. I am going to try @blazinzuk's idea out, and see about some 2" lift springs to help.

3. The pitman arm came loose a bit from the steering gear. I think the splines are getting settled. No damage visible.

D. I want to try to get the ABS sensors mated up with the GM wiring. Cruise still works, I just hate the dang light on the dash.

Other than those issues, the truck has been awesome. I am really enjoying the truck a lot.
