2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
I have one 6.5 at work and I love the sound every time I run it.
I know the truck has it's problems, but it really is a good sound. Very distinct. Something that is not common.

On another note.

Same codes still present and the truck is running odd. PO370 and PO251 are still hard codes that don't reset. After texting back and forth last night with @campfire and reading some stuff on dieselpage.com, I came across this info that narrows it down to need a new IP.

P0251 Injection Pump Cam System
P0370 Timing Reference High Resolution

P0251 is due to a problem with the optical/electronic portion of the fuel injection pump.

P0370 is also produced when a problem exists in the optical/electronic portion of the fuel injection pump.

Though rarely the cause, a bubble in the fuel could distort the optical signal, and is mentioned in the GM service manuals as a possibility.

The standard rule (approach to solving problems) applies here when dealing with a problem fuel injection system.

1- Make sure plenty of clean commercial diesel fuel is in the tank.
2- Make sure the fuel filter is clean.
3- Make sure the electric fuel lift pump is generating fuel pressure.
4- Make sure you cannot identify any loose electrical connectors or abraded wiring associated with the fuel injection pump.
5- Make sure all of the above have been eliminated as a cause of this problem before spending any money on parts or labor for a new injection pump.

Just a thought starter here, but when I was at Workhorse we continued to use the 6.5 in na and turbo varieties. When the switch to ultra low sulfur fuel came into effect in 2007 our supplier for rebuilt injection pumps was a stickler for requiring the use of stanadyne fuel additive due to the loss of lubricity in the fuel. Are any of you guys doing anything to account for the lack of sulfur in the fuel?

Reason for asking is we'd get the codes setting for the optical sensor when the pump wiped out due to lack of lubrication. Our rebuilder would report back to us on warranty claims when the pumps came in what the nature of the failure was. A lot failed due to lack of lubrication.

You all may already be doing this and if so disregard, but I'm just curious.

Bolted the bed down last night with some anti-seize on the bolts and drove the truck for 5-10 miles. Truck seems to run just a bit better now that it has proper fuel flow, but the hard codes are still present and the hard starts are still there. Going to drive this for the next couple weeks and see if things get better or worse.

With the hard start issue and single digit temps earlier this week, this truck failed to start. Had to call pops and get a loaner truck. Both my dailies are currently down now. Freaking turds.

The loaner truck ended up having a tag/registration issue, and that got me some tickets. So, I had to drive the diesel for a few days until I could fix the ball joints on my black and orange truck.

Nothing really has changed. Hard codes are still there, and it is extremely difficult to start if it's under 25*.

This was a couple weeks ago. It was just really funny to me.

After single digit and negative temps for the last week, yesterdays high was 38* so I decided to fire the truck up since I had been driving my black and orange truck.

Took quite a bit of cranking as I think the fuel was still gelled up from the negative temps the day before. And this was the smoke after 30-40 seconds of it finally starting.

Trying to sell some extra parts that I have laying around to fund my new injection pump. Until then, I am just starting the truck regularly and driving it every once in a while.

Tickets plural, eh?

I read this as "the truck that I 'borrowed' from the parking lot of Topeka's Wal-Mart attracted too much police attention. Something about my name not being on the registration."

:haha:

Yeah it was a bad deal. I got pulled over for speeding a bit, and then the cop ran the tag and it went down hill from there. My dad had put the wrong tag on the truck, and then on top of that it was expired. Then there was no proof of insurance in it, so I walked away with 4 citations.

Speeding? In a loaner vehicle? Silly rabbit, that only works out in movies.

If the insurance was legit at that time, you should be able to get rid of that ticket by providing proof to the ticketing agency. YMMV.

With proof of insurance and the truck properly tagged, I should be able to knock it down to just the speeding ticket.

Work is slow, and I'm keeping sane by day dreaming. I want more on the front of this truck, but I want to keep the factory bumper.

  1. The diesel bumper from the factory helps with the cooling.
  2. Only the diesels (and the sport tahoes) came with the functional intake holes.
  3. I don't want to add a massive amount of weight with a Ranch Hand bumper or the like.
So I am thinking of something more along the lines of a prerunner or "baja" style bumper to mount my 2 Hellas on.

Something like this that bolts through the factory bumper.

Thoughts on this look?

whatever floats your boat, it's your truck. Something like that should be pretty easy to make yourself.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the pre-runner look, so automatically I don't like the idea on your truck. Personal opinion aside, I don't think it would go with the look of your truck. I think something like a Westin bull bar or something like that would be better suited to the truck and its overall look.

Or even a classic push bar.
