2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
Man, nothing in my life is normal.

So I’ll try my best to summarize without confusing too many people.

As of Friday morning, the plan was to head to Nebraska to trade this truck for a 67-72 Suburban and a ‘75 2wd Suburban. A guy had reached out and offered both as a trade for The Warden.

The plan was to sell the ‘75 for cash, and keep the 67-72 as they are hard to come by.

But……lol

My Dad ended up calling me and asking if I would trade for a ‘78 Blazer he just picked up a couple months ago.

Along with all of this, we were notified Friday afternoon that my wife was accepted into a student loan forgiveness program for people who have worked for more than 10 years in a non-for-profit company in the field of their degree. (Side note: we paid $48k of our original $50k student loans, but still owed $44k due to interest. So was it really forgiveness? No lol). This changed everything as we “over paid” by 9 payments and will receive that money back.

So the story on the ‘78 goes like this;

A couple months back my dad and I drove up to Iowa to pick up a good full vert top for his ‘75 he has sitting in storage. On the way up he found a ‘78 on market place that seemed super clean and ran good, but was almost too cheap to be a real ad. So after texting the guy a few times, we determined it was legit and the guy had no idea what he had. He was the original owner and the truck only had 27k miles on it. Yes you read that right, 27k documented miles due to paperwork in the glove box. We grabbed it on the way back and I drove it home an hour at 70mph with the cruise set and the AC blowing cold.

So after some thought and conversations with my wife and boys, we decided to skip the 2 suburban deal and jump on the opportunity to own a literal Time Capsule and deal of a lifetime.

My dad will now be the owner of the Warden, I will be finishing the 4x4 swap on his dime, and we don’t officially have to say goodbye yet. I will now own a ‘75/‘78/‘86 K5, and have a solid driver while I really focus on the 2 projects.

So on that note, this thread will be updated as Pops decides to work on this truck.

Believer or not, God has a funny way of making life one worth grabbing popcorn and enjoying the twists and turns.

To be continued…

(Pssst, see my new thread for pictures of the ‘78.)

Man, nothing in my life is normal.

Great update!

From my popcorn-eating perspective, it makes for a great story. I hope you also see that from your perspective in the middle of the chaos.

I'm in a similar spot where I'm a.l.m.o.s.t. ready to sell off my rig. But also not sure what to expect once I finally get that accomplished. It's a weird thing, mentally.

This. So much this.

Didn't the truck originally come from a family member?
Technically it was the business’s truck, but yes he was the one using it for said business. But the state in which he owned it was completely different haha. He really likes all the upgrades and is excited to enjoy them in person rather than vicariously.

I bumped the black and orange ‘00 thread a few weeks ago, and forgot to bump this one. The deal Pops and I made includes this white whale also. The youngest is a bit further away from driving, but has yet to waiver from the idea of him buying this from me for his first vehicle. So plans are to get it back in a few months and get it on the operating table.

I couldn’t ever find the time to tear the truck apart, but magically when my dad bought it, I had more time. We got a reman 4x4 trans, T-case, and cross member in last summer, but unfortunately the T-case was no good and stuck in 4Lo. I since found a good case so that next on the list when we get the truck back. Still need to figure out a front driveshaft, and cut the floor for the 4x4 shifter. After that the focus is back on the front end. Steering needs better geometry and the spring bushings are shot already.

But…..it feels great to have the Warden back at the penitentiary!

When we parked this back in October, we found that there was a decent fuel leak coming from somewhere at the back of the engine. My youngest boy finally convinced me to take a look at it and charge up the batteries(it has a parasitic draw).

We found that when my dad changed the fuel filter last, he didn’t get the gasket on right or the housing tight enough. Definitely a silly leak for us to ignore as long as we did.

Trickle charged the batteries to 2 days and started it for the first time yesterday.

First start after sitting 6 months.

Then he wanted me to get a video of the turbo noises.
