2001 Jeep Cherokee, no longer cheapbeater

All done and got it hauled back home. We’re really happy with how it turned out. It lowered the front of the Jeep a bit but that was expected.

Strapped down for the ride home. Hard to see but the holes in the center 1/4” skid plate are for access to the winch mounting bolts.

Also scored this explorer 8.8 rear. Disk brakes, 3.73’s and a track-loc for $150. Gonna order up a swap kit from ruffstuff and track down a 3.73 front axle. Got a few weeks before I want to be on the trail with it so hopefully the stars align and I get it under the Jeep by then.

Looks good. 2 questions:

Don't you already have Jeep axles lined up for this swap?

And does it not drive under its own power?

1- I do. But now I’ll be selling the 3.55 one and hunting down a 3.73 one. I’ll likely be able to trade an S10 blazer I got for free for what I need. This 8.8 is the perfect axle for what I want.

It does. But it’s 120 miles and there’s no radio in it so I’d have been bored as hell and the driveshaft U-joints are gonna need replaced. After operating at a certain angle for 160,000 miles then being lifted and operated outside of that angle they’ve got a little bit of vibes going on
 
Don’t worry I’ve got this on order to fix that spring under issue. And I’ve got the driveshaft from my F150 I’m gonna part out to donate a flange and the spare F150 driveshaft also has a flange

Been a little bit since I’ve had time to work on this. But took some initiative today and got after some smaller stuff.

Started by changing out the water i had in it for antifreeze, temps are already 34 and dropping. Not going to be cold enough long enough to do harm but this way I can’t forget again.

After changing the coolant I stole the batter to move a tractor around and figured while it was out I might as well run a die down the hold-down studs and build some new batter cables as well as wire in the winch.


This is the corroded and insufficient junk Chrysler used on these. Can see the negative post is already done

Here’s the factory cable size. Sure I like overkill, but this was an example of under building something. It’s gone in favor of 2ga

All done. Ignore the hideous blue split loom, it’s all I had so its gonna have to do for right now

Not only does it finally crank with sufficient speed like it should but having good clean connections and properly sized cables increased the volt meter reading from 13 up to 14.5 where it should be.

I do need to take the time to finish my AC delete. Slightly visible on the cutoff evaporator lines is a couple threads off my sweatshirt.

Its currently driveable and I use it for stuff here and there. Still working on getting the mouse nest remnants out of the HVAC which is a slow fight. Not sure whether to get an axle with 3.73's or just buy a $200 set of gears before starting the axle swap. Harvest is in full swing which takes priority
 
Decided to get on this and try and get back some motivation to work on it. I’ve had the alternator relocation parts for awhile but been to lazy to grab a belt. So today I grabbed a belt and tonight I made it happen

Gone is the AC compressor and the alternator now sits up there. The stock Cherokee mounting has the alternator freeballing it down by the oil pan and Chrysler alternators hate water and mud. So this will curb my alternator seizing like most do.
 
Since snow is flying tomorrow and temps are supposed to drop I took the last nice days we had and got the mouse disaster out of the HVAC. no fun at all but its finally done. Much nicer now to be able to have the blower on and windows up at the same time. This was during disassembly, not many pics were taken due to all the mouse crap everywhere.

Got it assembled today and then had to use it to get to the dozer so we could bring it back to the house. Nice to have a capable little 4x4 around since nothing else we had would reach where we needed to be

Jeep looks good, I like the bumper.

I’ve got a 89 I’ve been wheeling for a little while, just haven’t done a build page for it on here.

Thank you! After buying a suburban somewhat recently this thing sadly wont see much love. But it is still handy to have around
 
Not much of an update but I have been driving this a bit more. Which led to fixing the no front speakers situation. Found a whole bunch of broken wiring in the door hinge area.

I have since purchased new speakers but it's too cold to deal with installing them.

Also took care of most of my belt squeak. For some reason the new serp belt has had a pronounced squeak and moves around a little when changing engine speed. Checked all the pulleys and made this crappy shim for the fan drive. With the shim pushing the pulley out the squeak is 99% gone compared to 100% annoying.

Some pretty poor family medical issues have just came to the forefront, but I'm pretty set on atleast one vacation this year of either taking this or the suburban up there. Hell my 2013 would work also. Too many good trips I've missed out on with you guys
