I've been reading a bit about letting the turbo wind-down after a drive, so I've come to ask the experts.

How long of a wind down is needed after a drive and does the length of the drive dictate the amount of time needed to let the turbo wind down for 2003 duramax?

The wind down is to let cooler oil go through the turbo and cool it down before it is shut down so it doesn't seize.
I used drive calmer the last few minutes, then let it idle foe minute or 2.
The harder you were pushing it before you stopped the longer you want to cool it, but I think 5 minutes should be safe enough, most commercial trucks will shut down automatically after 5 minutes of idling

I've been doing a minute or two after my drive from work which is about 30-35min drive.

Now I also read these engines aren't really for quick trips and to maximize your errands to have fewer short.

So every drive needs to have this cool down oiling done?

Also on some duramax Reddit's these guys let the truck run as they fuel up, is this necessary?

Driving through the neighborhood to your house is enough. I’ve always been told 30sec-1min but I’ve yet to hear or experience personally roasting a turbo by not doing that.

You don’t need to let it run while you fill it up. The newer emissions diesels don’t like quick trips but an 03 dmax won’t mind it. My parents put 200k miles on their 03 and never cooled it down or anything and never had an issue. I’ve put 300k combined on two separate Cummins and didn’t cool off and it was fine. I don’t let my turbo’d tundra cool off anymore than what it takes to back in my driveway.

Don’t let the internet cause you to overthink this.

The cool down is only needed if you're pushing it hard, pulling a heavy load going up the hill.
Driving normal, you're fine, just give it 30 seconds to ease your mind

Get a Pyro. Let it cool to about 400 degrees before shutdown. It lets the oil flow take away some heat so you dont cook the oil in the turbo and coke it up. Shortens the life. I believe those are water cooled so they cool that way anyways.

When working my ‘03 hard, I let it cool down for about 5 min. I daily mine and live less that a few miles from my daily stuff. I don’t cool down or anything while doing DD things. I’m sitting about 230k with no issues with the turbo. And generally speaking, I’m hard on stuff and my ‘03 doesn’t care.

At what temp is there cause for concern? When I'm on driveline idling for 30+ in this Arizona summer of 110-115, it gets to about 200-210 and trans to about 200ish with the AC on. Seems fine to me as it's not overheating and once I get moving it drops. But... what temp should I consider shutting it off to cool or can I when stuck in line or traffic jam.

Put it in park and shut it off. Just that simple.
I can't do that in driveline getting kids from school. I sit with ac on truck idling in park as we inch ever so slowly forward. Hahaha the thought of parked with no AC out here sounds brutal. My old old truck had no ac it was brutal hahahahaha

When the trans goes over 220* then maybe put it in neutral. Otherwise don’t worry about it.

This is a pre emissions diesel. These things dgaf and absolutely love getting worked to death. Hell they prefer it.

Ok... I hear ya . I've never had a diesel so I appreciate the information... thanks

Understood. I just know how the internet spins things and how it makes these things seem like delicate flowers. I spent 15yrs beating the shit out of these diesels making triple and quadruple factory power. These trucks dgaf and are happiest with 15k behind them doing 0-60mph sprints.
