241/205 doubler

hey hey, Rick... welcome to the addiction... :haha:
Whats Up Buddy!! it was you talking about this set up that led me here, I just googled the correct terminology and Wha La!! I found this site, it looks like a good one. Thanks, we'll have to get together soon , drop me an e-mail, I left it at the other site for ya, ..Rick (Salt-Man) :truck:

Here's most of the cost of this project, the intermediate shaft that couples the 241 to the 205. I got it from D&D machine for $250, its chromoly and its 31 spline (I'm using the 31 spline input from a Ford 205 that I cannabilized for its 32 spline front output).

How did you measure for this?)Length that is)

so that I could do this:

Here I assume that the seal retainer just fits snug into the hole you ground out. When the 205 is bolted in place, do you just lay a bead of RTV to keep the 241 fluid from leaking out?

Without the chain drive, I take it the pump is no longer needed?

And done

Very nice setup. I will need to find me a 205 when I get home.

Additional questions:

Where did you get the aluminum? Any specific grade?

Thanks for any info you can give.

I didn't, its the same shaft for Duffy's kit which uses the same piece of 1/2" plate. Its the right length when using a 231/241 half and a piece of 1/2" plate.

Yep

I got it from an aluminum place here in Denver but you can buy it online. Its 6061T6.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. Not sure if I want to do this and gain the 7 inches or get a divorced 205 and put it behind my 241 since I have the SYE and would only require a short shaft between the two(this is for the sub and I want a longer driveline in frontto alleviate the angle with a flat clocked t-case)and cut off the front output. Will have to see how long that combo would be and decide if it is feasable.

this set up seems a lot more suited to us do it yourself'ers and cheaper to do, I'm liking it

I found a 205 for TH400. That would be what I need for this correct? Can you elaborate on your cable shifters? Is the reason you had to clock the 241 to get it out of the way of the front driveshaft? Would a driverside drop work better in that case? Sorry for all of the questions but I am amazed at what you did and the cost of it all. I am in Aww!

It will have a 32 spline input (good) and I believe it will be a round pattern case too (which you need to mate to a 241). So yeah, that should be the right case.

Can you elaborate on your cable shifters?

I'll make a seperate post on them when I finish, I'm working on this stuff this weekend.

Yep and yep, Duffy's kit only works with a driver's side drop case.

Well I am not as talented as 38377K5 but if I can get all of the parts I may see what I can get into. Otherwise I will just rebuild and SYE the 241 and install it in place of my worn 208.

Ok I found a drivers side drop 241 for $50. I also found a 205 but the guy wants $500. YIKES! I am going to buy the 241 anyways. Is there anyway to mate the 10 spline figure 8 205 to the gear box of the 241? If not what do I need to start looking for at the grave yard? What did the round pattern 31 spline input 205 come in?

Why is that? I figured you'd be able to clock the 241 any way you wanted.

The 6 bolt pattern is not symmetrical, Duffy's kit (like every clocking ring I could find) is drilled to clock the t-case up or down. To mount the t-case upside down, the clocking ring needs to be drilled differently than anything I could find for sale. Thus, I bought a blank clocking ring and drilled/tapped it myself.

I really don't think you can make the figure 8 pattern 205 work, besides you would need to have the input bore in the case opened up to use the bigger bearing necessitated by the 31 or 32 spline input gears.

Finding a round pattern 205 is really the way to go IMO.

AFAIK, the only passenger drop round pattern 205's out there are in 80's 1 ton Chevy trucks, they all used 32 spline input gears.

I put a Ford 31 spline input gear into a Chevy (passenger drop) 205 case. I did this because I already had the input gear and it fits directly into the Chevy 205 case.

As for using the 10 spline 205, the figure 8 pattern probably won't overlap onto the aluminum plate. Also, I don't think Duffy makes 10 spline intermediate shafts.
Could you you make the plate larger to accommodate the figure 8 pattern? How I am picturing it in my head it would just hang over the edge of the 241 a little. Maye I am overlooking something :dunno:. This would still leave you without the intermediate shaft...
