As far as the fuel smell goes, what, if anything have you done with the evaporative side of the fuel system? Running the 5.3 in mine with no cats and no charcoal canister lent to a heavy raw fuel odor after longer sustained runs in warm to hot weather. The vent line to the fuel system was open with the line up to under the hood. Larry's 8.1's were setup the same way and his burb had a lot of raw fuel odor too. The plan when we went to the 8.1 was to incorporate a factory evaporative emissions system to the truck. So when I made the call to Howell I had them keep the purge solenoid on the engine and the solenoid on the canister. This will help with the raw fuel odor. I've got to drop the fuel tank to mount the canister Larry robbed from a GMT800 truck at the boneyard. Some observations:
Running real rich, time to start looking at a tune. I hope that takes care of most of the fuel smell but may need to look at cats.... I do not miss that smell from pre-FI days.
With the windows down I pull fumes into the cab (discussed in posts above). Will be looking at routing exhaust out the sides.
It is loud under wot.
The temp gauge, Dakota Digital, reads about 210 to 220 uphill or down. Readings at radiator and both hoses are all under 200. And I can briefly touch the radiator cap. It is not running hot. The gauge design sucks - needs to have the operating range expanded - 200 to 220 is only about 1/8” swing. I have a scanner on the way, thanks @#Burbslut for the recommendation.
It is loud.
I think I feel vibrations from the new motor mounts- ORD units with their crossmember. I think this is a topic under 1 of the other 8.1 threads. I need to check for loose stuff but there is a vibe....
Pulls real strong, very nice to not need a mashed pedal run to get to the top of a hill faster than the average miler in their Prius. Pulls steady or accelerates in any gear.
Have not gone far enough to get and idea on fuel consumption.
Loud. It is.

Larry's K10 lacks any evaporative emissions system and does not have any fuel smell. His burb does though. I did catch a whiff on mine today since the canister is not hooked up yet. That was after a 40 mile run from work to my house. As far as the fuel smell. I have no cats, no canister no recirculation stuff and no fuel smell. I have my exhaust routed in the stock position out the side, behind the tires.
Maybe I just lucked out.

Yep the burb and the K10 are identical as far as the 8.1 setup goes. However, I don't know How much of an evaporative system the K10 had to start with. The burb did have a complete system that would have been stock for a '89, but the canister was removed to allow fitment of the second battery tray. The vent line from the tank may be open under the hood somewhere. I know for a fact mine is until I get the canister installed out back.Is his Burb set up the same way? I have hauled a 22ft camp trailer over 3,000 miles in one trip. Not one fuel scent.
Super crazy over the last few days, not able to comment in detail. I have a feeling mine is running super rich at idle. It will knock you out and leave an exhaust smell on your clothes....
I have a scanner on the way - https://www.amazon.com/BlueDriver-Bluetooth-Professional-iPhone-Android/dp/B00652G4TS
Will that show fuel system detail?
It is not misfiring at any rpm, load, etc....
Mine did have the evap canister but that was eliminated. I do not smell raw fuel so I hope that does not become an issue.
