Some observations:

Running real rich, time to start looking at a tune. I hope that takes care of most of the fuel smell but may need to look at cats.... I do not miss that smell from pre-FI days.

With the windows down I pull fumes into the cab (discussed in posts above). Will be looking at routing exhaust out the sides.

It is loud under wot.

The temp gauge, Dakota Digital, reads about 210 to 220 uphill or down. Readings at radiator and both hoses are all under 200. And I can briefly touch the radiator cap. It is not running hot. The gauge design sucks - needs to have the operating range expanded - 200 to 220 is only about 1/8” swing. I have a scanner on the way, thanks @#Burbslut for the recommendation.

It is loud.

I think I feel vibrations from the new motor mounts- ORD units with their crossmember. I think this is a topic under 1 of the other 8.1 threads. I need to check for loose stuff but there is a vibe....

Pulls real strong, very nice to not need a mashed pedal run to get to the top of a hill faster than the average miler in their Prius. Pulls steady or accelerates in any gear.

Have not gone far enough to get and idea on fuel consumption.

Loud. It is.

As far as the fuel smell goes, what, if anything have you done with the evaporative side of the fuel system? Running the 5.3 in mine with no cats and no charcoal canister lent to a heavy raw fuel odor after longer sustained runs in warm to hot weather. The vent line to the fuel system was open with the line up to under the hood. Larry's 8.1's were setup the same way and his burb had a lot of raw fuel odor too. The plan when we went to the 8.1 was to incorporate a factory evaporative emissions system to the truck. So when I made the call to Howell I had them keep the purge solenoid on the engine and the solenoid on the canister. This will help with the raw fuel odor. I've got to drop the fuel tank to mount the canister Larry robbed from a GMT800 truck at the boneyard.

The 8.1 like most late model GM V8 engines will probably run in the 200-210 degree range. What little I've driven mine so far the stock gauge is showing near 180-190 but that gauge is 100% accurate. I need to run with the scan tool on and see what the ecm value is for coolant temp.

The pull in any gear is awesome. No more flat footing the pedal anymore that's for sure. I'm going to run mine to work tomorrow and I'll take a reading after the round trip.

Congrats on getting it on the road!

Driving mine with the tech2 on it when I drove mine home from work today had it right at 200 degrees. That was with 75 degrees ambient and 85 degrees at the intake air temp sensor. My stock gauge was reading halfway between the hash mark and 210 mark. Pretty much what I've seen of an 8.1 in a truck or RV.

I have Ord Kevlar mounts and crossmember... I don’t really have any vibrations. 8.1/nv4500.

Happy to share info bud.

As far as the fuel smell. I have no cats, no canister no recirculation stuff and no fuel smell. I have my exhaust routed in the stock position out the side, behind the tires.
Maybe I just lucked out.

Larry's K10 lacks any evaporative emissions system and does not have any fuel smell. His burb does though. I did catch a whiff on mine today since the canister is not hooked up yet. That was after a 40 mile run from work to my house.

Is his Burb set up the same way? I have hauled a 22ft camp trailer over 3,000 miles in one trip. Not one fuel scent.

Super crazy over the last few days, not able to comment in detail. I have a feeling mine is running super rich at idle. It will knock you out and leave an exhaust smell on your clothes....

Yep the burb and the K10 are identical as far as the 8.1 setup goes. However, I don't know How much of an evaporative system the K10 had to start with. The burb did have a complete system that would have been stock for a '89, but the canister was removed to allow fitment of the second battery tray. The vent line from the tank may be open under the hood somewhere. I know for a fact mine is until I get the canister installed out back.

It would help to know what the short term and long term fuel trims are on yours. Does it seem like the is misfiring at all?

I have a scanner on the way - https://www.amazon.com/BlueDriver-Bluetooth-Professional-iPhone-Android/dp/B00652G4TS

Will that show fuel system detail?

It is not misfiring at any rpm, load, etc....

Mine did have the evap canister but that was eliminated. I do not smell raw fuel so I hope that does not become an issue.

I'm not familiar with that one. But watching the video on Amazon it does show that you can read the live data on top of reading and clearing codes. So it should do the job.

Some quick updates (not much drive time due to life...) -

I was getting code P0327, knock sensor error. Well, that was spot-on! After a quick peak I discovered the ds sensor was not there, removed to fit headers.....

I was on the search for a used/bad sensor to see about fitment when @#Burbslut gave me the tip on using different thread size knock sensors (Standard Motor Products KS63). That worked great - no codes but only ~40 miles.

Updates - Jason at EC Auto and Iron Fabrication helped me chase down the electrical issues (Fuse block/cluster/sending unit etc). Thank you Jason :woot:

The beast is running great now so I can move on to the list (lists, endless lists....).

@Larry - 2 things: thanks for the 8.1 help and maintenance of your pages/threads!

And my mini-me is not quite the match as yours .......
