2insane’s Random 6.2/6.5 Diesel Projects

Took her on a test drive. The old thermostat was not opening and all that pressure caused it to leak from the new gasket. I replaced it with a 180 degree and resurfaced the therm housing flat. No more issues or leaks.

All back together. Running fantastic! Customer picked it up and took it home this last Friday. He sent me several messages this weekend on a job well done and is extremely satisfied. He plans on bringing it back over after the exhaust gets done and the break in period is finished to do more upgrades and maintenance.

Here you can see the harmonic balancer rubber is failing. More exhaust pics and driveshaft to exhaust clearance. The downpipe is in there very tight, not a lot of room for the starter or the frame. I bet that starter gets really really hot. Some heat wrap, but definitely help a lot on that issue. 4” pipe dumping in front of pass rear tire.

Would moving that crossmember back on top of the lower frame flange eliminate, or at least greatly reduce, the 2" tube spacer under the tcase mount?

That is a good question! I’ll take a better look at it this weekend! As far as I can tell, compairing the sm465 to the nv4500, there is a night and day difference between the two. The nv4500 is soooooo much nicer to shift! Also with the 4.56 axle gearing, it is the perfect combo because of the crazy low first gear and crazy high 5th gear.

I am regretting not getting that junkyard nv4500.

Maybe stupid question, but... is there something not to like about the spacer?

I believe that the driveshaft will not clear if you eliminate that spacer, at least from what I see in the pictures.
The nv4500 came on trucks with W or S shapes crossmember to clear the driveshaft.
This is a flat crossmember

The first picture shows the identification plate numbers on the current customers ATS turbo kit. After researching those numbers, I could not find any information on a direct turbo replacement and very little info on turbo rebuild. I recently and luckily stumbled across a guy parting out his 6.2 diesel with an ATS turbo kit and found that his identification plate numbers had the missing numbers that I needed. Pics 2-3.

T04B90 Turbo 409080-9009 brought up a plethora of turbo replacements. Here’s a few current working links:

Even Amazon sells them here:

Also learned that the ATS turbo has a heat shield I have yet to find a replacement.
Anyhow, customer ordered the turbo from /www.tractorpartsasap.com because it was free shipping with a discount code making total cost $295

I've used tractorpartsasap for actual tractor parts. Should be able to just use a regular turbo heat blanket I bet. Napa sells RotoMaster turbos. I did some of their stuff on a 7.3L and it seemed decent quality. Shoup is a good ag parts place also.

Do you know Napas part numbers for the turbo?

Here are ATS turbo new vs old measurements. The new one is quite a bit smaller on the inducer side and I think it will be interesting to see how it plays out after the swap. It will probably spool a lot faster with less lag at lower rpm’s.

More compairson photos. The old one had a rubber O-ring on the housing which the new one did not. I also had to re clock the housing on the new one so the oil feed and drain was aligned in the correct position. Notice all the carbon build up coming from the exducer plate from the old one.

Here is compressor wheel part number for the ATS Turbo.

For shits and giggles I also got measurements of the Banks Turbo Compressor Wheel for comparison.

Here is direct replacement for the ATS wheel in a Billet:
