Thm400, 3.08's in 10 bolts at the moment.
I am running 33's right now but plan on running 35's in the future. I dont do any rock crawling(not too many big rocks in NW Oklahoma) but occasionally run it through the mud. Mostly used for hunting and fishing and the sudden urge to drive through everything i can find. I am going to do a gear swap and i would like to hear what everones opinion is.

After building the engine it would roll smoke off the 235's that were on it when i got it.:D It will spin the 33's but doesnt have the torque i would like for it to have.

I checked out the gear calculator on 4lo.com and 3.73's would put me close to stock for both tire sizes. Just wondering if anybody is running 4.10's with a similar set up.
Thanks

If you are planning 35's, get the 4.10's. You will like it a lot more with the deeper gears. I wish that mine would spin the 33's with 3.08's, but even in low range with the front hubs unlocked it won't do it. I plan on sticking with the 33's, but I am still planning on doing 4.11's to help with towing.

Thanks for the info folks.
I found a place to get a 4.11 ring gear and pinion and all seals and bearings for the front and back for a little less than $400. Wondering if you guys know of a better deal somewhere?

$400 + install seems like it would be comparable to just buying a set of one tons (or even 3/4 tons) that could have 4.10s already. I know you would need to buy wheels too but it seems like it would money well spent. Plus you will get an extra inch of lift from the bigger axles.

Keep an eye on CL for axles. I stayed with 10/12 bolt combo. I went to 3.73 from 3.08's on 33's. I'm not happy with it. I wish I would have gone 4.10's. I got my front axle for $50.00 and the rear for $200.00. The rear was newly rebuilt and I was in a hurry.

On the issue specifically on the one tons. You may be able get a set for $800 to $1200 and bolt them in with the gearing you want.

Or, look for a 14bff in the right gearing. You should be able to pick an axle up for $200 and a 10 bolt or D44 front for real cheap.

Can you do the R&P yourself? If so, then not a bad price. Your labor is free. I have never done a gear set and have no desire to try.

EDIT: Forgot to mention - I'm running the 350/350/203.

Just my $0.02

Go w/ the 4:10's. I have 4.56 w/ 35's and the 700r4 and it's nice. the pricing for the gears and install kits seems right in line. I have to re-gear the front, and out the door including install here in town is right around $500.

4:10s bare minimum for 35s IMO. Im running 4:10s , 700r and 33s its a very good combo.

4.10s are the ideal setup for 35 inch tires.i had 3.73 and it did not feel right.i have a 465 and it is much better with the hhigher gearing.doing the setup yourself is a real tough thing to do.a lil off and your gearset wont last long.like was said you can get used axles for about the same price as regearing, but then you have to try and find them and unless you rip em open and make sure they are all good.500 is a good deal on the regearing.i was quoted 900 before i decided to do it myself.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been busy for a few days doing training for work (Vehicle Extrication--Some major :hack: going on there.) and have not had a chance to respond. As far as the regearing goes i will be doing it myself. I have rebuilt them for others several times as I worked for seven years fulltime doing mechanic work and now part time.

Has anybody noticed an increase in fuel mileage after switching to 3.73 or 4.10,4.11 gears from 3.08 with larger tires.
Took the truck on a short fishing trip the other day, about 120 miles total and it sucked the gas down.

Less load on the engine, but higher rev's...I think economy is gonna be about the same.

Another vote for 4.10's...

Freeway rpm will be a bit high at 2650 rpm at 65 mph (on 35's)...but not terrible.

Awwh, C'mon. Currently, I have 3.08's and 35's. Just did John Bull Trail last weekend and was fine. My tranny and ring gears hated me but I made it.

I vote for 4:10. Just waiting until I get my 8-lug front so I can put them in the F/R at the same time.
