398HBX's Build Thread - Engine is IN!

I've never used the Lizard skin, so no advice there.
I have been hearing good stuff about the AL's liner HNR. I have used the AL's regular bed liner and was very impressed with it. The HNR is said to be a great base coat for the "tougher" bed liner material , which can be custom colored how ever you want. It sprays nicely and the texture can be adjusted with higher or lower air pressure to the gun. My plan on my Cummins K5 will be to use the HNR on the interior firewall and front floorpans then the bed liner from the top of the firewall seam on down through the rest of the interior.

If it isn't going to be a hardcore off roader, put the interior back in it. Mine has no interior in it, and I hate it. It is loud and obnoxious. I bought a parts Blazer just so I could swap an interior back into it.

Agreed, I wish I had a carpet but my cab leaks. When I had a carpet it was so much more quiet and was warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

That is real good advice. This is not going to be a hard core machine, basically a bug-out truck, hunting truck, and generally just being able to say "I built that!"

Too cold to work outside....

Sice it was too cold to work on the truck outside I decided to do what I could in my shop. My front grill had a break in the corner. A new one from LC was $169 so I decided to see if I could fix this one. (Only 73 and 74 used this grill, all other years are about $40 for a new grill:confused:)

Painted with Plastic paint, then ceramic 2K chassis Black, then Rustolem spray-on bedliner.

For the most part it think it will work. You can no longer tell that is was broken. Worst case scenario, I will have to buy a new one.

How is that 2k ceramic chassis black? I just bought a quart to do my inner fenders.

Also why bedline the grill? But regardless, good job on the fix!

The 2K ceramic is one of the best paints that I have used. It spray nice, provides good coverage, and hardens up HARD. Just make sure to use a larger (1.3mm?) tip for your HVLP. I put the bedliner on first just to give the grill a slight texture, the rustoleum beliner gives it a texture almost like 100 grit sandpaper.

I got out all of the engine parts today and took them down to the machine shop so that they could start work on the block. Once I got there, I realized that I did not have the harmonic balancer or the crankshaft pulley. I looked all over the shop but could not find the damn things. Word to the wise, having lots of shelves and boxes in a nice but LABELING whats in them is critical! Not finding it, I ended up ordering a new one. The old was was almost 40 years old and it probably wouldn't hurt to have a new one on there anyway. I didn't really know what I was looking for but I ended up buying a Professional Products 90002 PowerforcePlus Race Damper. Does anyone know anything about these? The tech data made it seem like a decent one, but then again, all sales data is suspect.....

New dash Bezel

I make industrial control equipment for a living so I decided to use Front Panel Express to make some new dash panels for my instrument bezel. I think they came out pretty damn good!.

383 Stroker Started!

I started work on the engine, doing pre-assembly cleaning, and checks. Not too far along but figured I would post some quick picks. After going to the machine shop, I decided that it would be cheaper to buy a new block from Summit. All of the machine work has already beed performed, just needed to be cleaned, inspected, and painted.

Wouldn't you like to know.........

Actually the 8 switches at the top right are for security. If they are set in a certain sequence, you can use the key to start the truck. If you set them in another sequence, you turn on accessory power, then go baby go, then start, no key required! The switches are three position switches, that's a lot of possible combinations. I originally planned on using the go baby go switch for a blower, I might still you never know.

I always thought about doing something like that! No theif would ever be able to guess the right combo!

Shiela has a heartbeat!

First, don't give man any **** about the name. Sometimes the names of a vehicle just come to you and they stick, whether we like it or not......

Anyway, for the first time in 28 years, she has a heartbeat! She's a purdy sumbitch ain't she?
