4.10’s or 4.56’s with 700r4, 35” tires

Understand that finances dictate the level of upgrades but as said above ya should really consider a better L/S type aftermarket differential and shafts while your regearing the rear axle.
The OEM open diff is known to be weak and the factory Gov-Loc’s are a time bomb in the 10B’s - and lastly the 28-spline shafts are known to fail even with easy driving and mild off roading ( and you don’t want to loose a c-clip retained axle while in motion ).

All this is just good advice for preventing failures where GM went too far on weight saving reductions in using this axle in the rear of a full-size truck.

You’ve made a solid choice in gear ratio to tire size for what you plan to do with your truck !

Skipped all the comments but I have 315/75R16 tires (35s) with 4:10 gears and a 6.2L diesel and 700R4. It puts my speedo real close to stock. Plenty of takeoff low end with the deep first gear and a good place to go 65-75 down the highway. I get like 17 mpg with my diesel too.
I miss my diesel.
It was a perfect grandpa truck. And got 17 mpg in a 3/4 ton Suburban with a th 400.

Can’t tell you all how much I appreciate your responses. I think the general consensus is that 4:56’s should work pretty well for me.

At this point, I’m going to just put those into my 10 bolt, but am well aware that they may not last as long as I’d wish.

After looking at 5 in Ca, it’s a grand to me, more or less, to pick one up. Buying and rebuilding (regearing too) a used 14 bolt, I think would run me at $2500, which incentivizes me to take it easy on my 10 bolt!
If you are spending $2500 for any 14bolt you are getting ripped off.

For $2.5k it should have a selectable locker, the right gears and disc brakes. With disk brakes and an ARB, Boyce gets $5175. https://www.boyceequipment.com/gm-14-bolt-rear-axles
DAMN it man !!
For 5K that axle should come with all that plus 40-spline RCV steering with CRANE/REID knuckles-n-C’s a full crew to install it accompanied by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders to perform for you and be hand fed wings by ten of the very best waitresses that Hooters has to offer!

Heavy D and those guys do.
Those guys ,and many others, are able to buy completed sub components for their builds instead of spending time and effort getting down in the smaller details of the subassemblies on what all they build and they get to tack on a percentage to the final product adding to the profit margins - like buying a prefabricated product that saves time. Buying things already good-to-go saves time so it’s worth it for them.

I’m not hating on anyone for buying completed parts such as what BOYCE offers. They’re offering a product and should get paid for what they offer - my jovial comment was just pointing towards a thought of “spend wisely” because there are other options out there.

I did not read through every post because of ADHD.

I have 35" tires, 4.56:1 gears, 700R4 with a stock TBI 5.7. I built it to go fast in the desert, so I did not go to 4.88: gears. I should have. At 65 MPH it is running below HP revs. The thing hunts for a gear on the slightest grade. I usually pull it out of OD running under 60 MPH. The truck weighs 7k fully loaded, so that has some bearing on it.

Yeah those guys cater to the ones with pockets deep enough to just buy a built project. I'd rather spend a ton of time to save a ton of money. I won't pay anyone to do anything that I can't find a way to do myself.

Don't mean to interrupt your thread, but I will (cheesy grin)

I'm going tomorrow to check out a 6 lug 2014 and up 9.5" 12 bsf. Has a locker and new axle shafts. All it needs is regeared.
Perfect for the suburban.
$250. Don't give up they're out there Chris

did EVERYONE not notice he is in cali ........... the reason the prices are stupid high . . . yes there is some deals out there but you better act super fast when they pop up .

and i would skip the 10 bolt and do a nice 9.5 semi float 14 bolt and keep 6 lug .
I’ve looked for a couple of years, 1k is pretty much the going rate out here. Then of course, a possible re-gear, perch moves, axles… Gets pricey for a shade tree parts replacer like me.
