40" tires with 4.88 gears on fullsize chevy???

one question I might ask first is, do I really need the 40´s or are 37´s large enough....

Truck is still street legal, needs to pass inspection, it is used on the street, used to tow and haul stuff and also serves as a weekend offroad fun toy. So it kind of needs to do everything well....

IMO, only you can really answer that. Realistically 40's (or even 37's) aren't great for towing.

well, I know that the truck is a compromize, no doubt. A truck that needs to tow, haul, drive on the street, be good in slow and fast offroad stuff will never do everything 100% perfect. I did run 35´s before changing he axles over and it toed and hauled ok with those. I just need a little more ground clearence, therefore I thought about 37´s the whole time. The 40´s jsut interested me, if I already go larger, if I should go that large. But you might be right, 40 might be better offroad but probably make it worse on the street and twoing/hauling stuff....

Also check out the Yukon hubs. A lot of guys are digging them. I think with the overdrive you'd be fine with 37s to offset the 4.88s.

Thanks for all the info! I might actually get a set of 37´s and try them out. Then I guess I can still see if it is plenty for what I need or if I have to go to 40´s.

I´ll stick with 37" tires. Makes it easier to fit and stuff all the way in with minor lift without making it look like a full trail only truck or a buggy.

A guy at our local park switches his tires as soon as he gets to the park, as he DDs his rig, then switches back when he's done.

Just a thought.

If you have not bought tires yet you might check out the Radial Maddog tires from Pitbull. They are 38.5X13.5 and come in most rims sizes, also they are load range E. I am going with these when i wear out my 37"MTR's, I really like that they are load E tires. Here is a review 8lug did on them Link. Good luck and let us know how you like whatever you end up with!

I have thought of this too. Problem is, two sets of wheels and tires that probably will not wear out before the rubber gets hard and craks. Don´t drive it that many miles. Plus a PITA to swap them out every time, I have to admit, I´m too lazy for that! ;)

Thank you for the info. Since you´re running the MTR`s in 37", how do you like them, how do they perform offroad/onroad?
Haven´t bought tires yet, still waiting for the wheels to get here, so I can have them powder coated. When all of that is done, it´ll be time for tires.

So far I thought of either BFG KM2´s, the MTR´s, the M/T ATZ P3 or MTZ....

All in 37x12.50R17.

I´ll keep you posted on what I´ll end up doing. I should probably modify the fenders first and see how much romm I have....

I like them but i have the older MTR's and they don't have a lot of time on them because i just finished my frame swap. I hear a lot of good things about them but mine are military take offs on 16.5" alum wheels. That was my main reason for getting them as they were $400.00 for the tires, this way i can make sure everything clears and works then spend some money on new tires and wheels later.

Oh, I see, I thought you had the Kevlar ones. that was one of the options I was thinkng about. I think it is a wise idea to check the clearance first, before dumping the $$$ on new wheels and tires, especially since they are not cheap in these large sizes.

I personally like a 5.13 with a 40

That is the best ratio, correct, however the 5.13 gears are weaker than the 4.88, so for towing with large tires, I´d rather have the added strength on the ring an pinion. But since I will most likely sta with 37`s, the 4.88 gears should be plenty low enough, especially with may granny low first gear and 4.3:1 low range.

Does anyone know if 37" tires fit into the rear wheel wells without cutting them? I mean full stuff, as far as he axle will go up!?
I know I have to modify the front, but the rear??

Thanks!

I have 37" KM2s and did not have to do any cutting in the back and had the tire stuffed as far as it would allow.

I can stuff my 40's in the rear with stock fenders :thumb:
