7-7-07 Been wheeling the K5 as-is, but need to do something else. Yep. Need presmog cab/title for trazer or something.

EDIT: 3-19-7 The K5 body is poofed...drivetrain is coming out and going in either a CUCV or a K30 crewcab. Post up and vote or something. :D Have an A/C question.

EDIT: Flipped the blazer before I got it caged. Killed the body. Time to look at other options. Crewcab, buggy blazer with streeeetched wheelbase or....?

EDIT: Building an 88 K5 now. Cylinder 5 in the 454 in the crew was kaput. Will fix - sell??? The K5 is 3/4 ton 4.10 locked. Going 1 ton, XMLs, hacking, and flexifying. Intended for a general do-all desert truck.

EDIT : The main point of this thread is to collect ideas and information, not just show off my build. If you like it, thanks, but please try to add useful info too.

I'm starting with a worn stock truck in need of some TLC then building. As I go though my repairs and build and collect information for each process or problem, I'll post it here. Should end up with a nice collection of tech. I'll post a start pic and start with the tech in the next day or so. The current project is getting it tuned up and running clean enough to try to smog it and get it transferred into my name. I'm gonna put a couple links to related threads in here to start. This first post will get updated with links as I go along.

Looking foward to some good reading!

Test fitting the XL. Wifey's getting the nasty purple tint off the windows.
Tore all the trim off tonight, and it's going to get the later model non-towing mirrors, and a coat of flat or semigloss black.

I think I'm going to lift it about 6" with fender cutting like my brother's. Straight out from the top of the fender in the front. Not sure about springs...52" (how much lift?) or my brother uses some late model tahoe rear springs in the front of his truck that work well. Flexy, 6-8", and he left the overload in the pack to act as a "progressive" bumpstop, and added 1/16" shims in the middle of the back between the leaves to reduce friction.

Not sure if I'll leave it dually width or not. ?Opinions? It'll make it harder to stuff the tires for sure. Seems like it would make it harder to steer, too, but I'm going Xover and steering assist ram anyway.

I think if it were mine Id make it single rear wheel unless it was going to be a tow vehicle only but if I had a truck as cool as that one I would have to wheel it. looks awesome so far.

I'm jealous, I don't see any rust. You Cali guys are lucky in that regard, but not in the smog department.

Uh, you'll probably make yourself sick.....

I added up the reciepts I have on hand the other dayvomit.gif:haha:

Its going to be SRW unless it gets the C&C 14FF I have which will make it about SRW wide but dual.

Going to ditch the bed and chop the rear frame to put the axle right behing the cab like willyswanter.

What I'm wondering is whether or not to leave it DRW width axles, but use SRW wheels on it - that's how it is in the test-fit pic. Or switch to SRW axles, SRW wheels.

The smog may kill me. Dunno what I'm gonna do if it doesn't pass. At least in this part of Cali you only have to smog when changing owner, not yearly insp. Yet.

Only rust I've found so far is two 2" round spots by the w/shield. Should I yank the w/shield to see how extensive it is? How? Don't want to....

I think I'll be OK. I'm not exactly a n00b. Run my family's machine and welding shop, and I have some hookups for some stuff here and there. Mostly hand-me-downs from my brother. I built a J**P back in the day (parting out now) and I've been involved in my brother's build and others.

you could put a diesel in it and get it over with. I don't thinkthere is any inspection for diesel vehicles. truck is looking good.

ARQ.

Yah, I know...I even have a line on a real nice 1993 6.5 TD, but it's more $ and trouble. I'm liking the 454, seems to pull pretty hard, just gotta get it to smog.

I say leave it a dually and wheel with it, tow with it, and haul with it. In my book, it's more bada$$ that way.

However, you might be able to make a little extra $$$ by selling dually parts.

I have a buddy with SRWs that wants to run H1 beadlock wheels. Will trade him if he wants to.

readymix? :D

That's going to be a nice rig. Looking forward to the build. What did you give for the XL's? From where? I think that's the route I'm going to go for dd status.

I got them free from my brother in exchange for dismounting the rest of his. He get's them government surplus. The XMLs are the best, but hard to find.

Gonna rebuild carb tomorrow. Wish me luck. My engine is filthy, esp intake. Oil, leaves, needles, grass, dirt...any good ideas on how to clean it without getting a bunch of crap in the engine?

just leave it all buttoned up and hotsy it off goober. I p-washed mine all the time. I also Strongly suggest a cage for rigidity first or the body will eventually silf destruct like mine, even quicker if you use the crane on it jerk:haha::rolleyes:.

I'm pondering the body/frame thing. Prolly 1" body lift, and haven't decided if I'm going to do the spring under the bolt head trick. Cage...I dunno. We'll see what happens when I get it flexin'.

You ever figger out how much lift those 'hoe springs gave you?

Send me a list of the stuff you want Logan to bring. Found that ring...
