44" tall X 12" Wide XMLs. My build thread.

Cool. Yeah, truck in my sig.

Here's the carb info as it appears on the carb.. (pretty sure it's original and correct for my rig)

7045228 TK

1285

The plot thickens. Autozone and NAPA online show these numbers for my truck. 17066558 or 17080212

I wonder what the diff is between those and mine. Mine is an older model, since it starts with 7 instead of 1. Wonder which I should use? Think the differences are prolly just internal, jet sizes etc. maybe. For now I'm gonna frow this one back together and see what happens.

Did more looking.

Looks like the 7045228 is for an older 400, maybe I'm undercarbed. Maybe it'll help me pass smog...

Ben showed me some Quadrajet rebuild tricks tonight. Brought the carb home to work on. Nothing like sitting the the kitchen table after a nice meal rebuilding a carb in yer underwear. :D :haha:

A few thoughts/questions. The carb on the left is my brother's old one off his '81 305 K10. Looking at it while reassembling mine, I noticed a couple things. Mine didn't hve the little sheet metal "dam" or baffle between the bowl and the accel pump, and his did...should I use it in mine? Either the 454 needs no baffle (more gas on accel) it or someone thought it didn't...

Other question is that dome shaped part to the left front side of mine. It's an adjustable needle and jet assy. Was adjusted all the way rich...any ideas? Brother's has a plastic cup and plunger in that cavity.

The seat for my needle has 2 grooves/holes cut in the sides, allowing more/quicker fuel to the bowl I guess. The one in my kit and my brother's have no holes. I'm gonna try the new one, maybe it'll reduce flooding offroad.

Another thing, in the hole to the front of where the power piston goes on my brother's, there is a needle and spring similar to an idle screw. Mine has nothing there, no threads....?

If anyone has any input, I appreciate it, meanwhile I'll be trying things and doing research.

After looking around, I'm pretty doing good, I'm just going to do some experimenting, but I want to know what the heck that other little needle/jet adjusment is in the front of the carb where the plug would be if it were electronic. Not adjustable assembled.

I will prolly end up ordering a carb build for my application, but I'm enjoying tinkering with it and learning about it, and I want to put this one back together and see if I can't get it running well enought to smog before I dump more $ into the truck.

I'm not getting what the other needle/jet is you are describing. Is it not readily apparent in the pics? Shoot/post another if it isn't.

That metal piece needs to be in there, if not, the fuel level in the accelerator pump well will vary with the float bowl, which is not a good thing. There is a one way check valve for the accelerator pump for a reason. :)

Well, some hooptie took it (the baffle) out. You know, the redneck more gas is better thing.

I figured out the other jet/needle I'm talking about I think. It's the thing I'm holding in the pic. It's the APT. Adjustable Part Throttle in the aneroid cavity. Reading up on it now.

The .pdf manuals I found here on CK5 are awesome if you're nerd enoguh to read and understand them. That's where I found the APT. Can't find the dang link, but I saved the file.

Anyone got info on tuning the APT? pdf just says to leave it alone, but mine was all the way rich, prolly from my friend the redneck.

I have to say I've not taken a Q-jet like yours apart, but APT is *typically* handled through the top of the carb, just "forward" (as on the engine) of the power piston, and adjusts the travel of the power piston. There are posts covering it here, a search should reveal them.

I thought all the aneroid cavity stuff was either MCS (if CCC, obviously yours aren't) dual capacity pump (again all were electrical AFAIK) and altitude adjusting components. I didn't run your carb number to see exact application, but was either by chance a high altitude variant?

Mine is for a '75 400 I think. Not right for my truck, but close. Not CA, and I don't think it's high altitude. These later carbs with the xtra cavity are called the "modified" ones. E4ME, E4MC, etc. PM me your address and I'll send you the Delco .pdf manual if you want. Very informative.

Hmmmm! APT...mine has nothing in the hole where everyone else's seems to be. the Delco pdf seems to show that mine is in the aneroid cavity. I'm gonna adjust it lean and try it. Hope there's nothing missing from that hole....:doah:

I've straightened a couple. I just sandwiched them with a couple steel plates and cooked them in an oven at around 400. Take them out and let them cool down before you unbolt them. I've found that it's hard to get them perfectly straight, but mine came out decent.

Got the carb together and on. Runs better, but still backfires thru the carb if I accel wrong (ignition?), but then picks up and pulls good, except seems to run out of fuel under extended heavy accel. PO put an electric fuel pump on it, presumably since the mechanical one died. I wonder if the electric one isn't up to the job???
