454 Motor build

All the good engine shops around here are swamped. Major backlog for some reason. I can wait. Just means I save for it easier.

Around here all but 1 or 2 auto machine shops have gone under..
One parts store that had a good machine shop stopped selling parts about 2 months ago, they cannot compete with AutoZone and the like--too many parts stores here for the amount of customers..they now only do machine shop work on an "appointment" basis, and charge accordingly..
Not many engines get rebuilt here now,so many good used ones in salvage yards that most people just buy one of those instead..

One other machine shop a few towns away I used to use,the owner retired and now a younger guy about 30 owns and runs it..he is "ok" for simple valve jobs ,etc, but for a high performance build I'd go to another shop 15 miles away, they are usually back logged several months though..they recently sold off a lot of SBC and BBC blocks & cranks they had bored out or turned and I've seen ads on CL for them, most priced at $350 ...they were engines customers never came back for after they heard the price I guess..some rare ones too, like early 427's and 409's..

I’m just excited about any motor build right now. I want my Blazer road worthy sooo freakin badly, I’m just going to do whatever I have to to get it there. So reading this thread gets my mind going with my motor too. :D. And Oh how I miss a healthy Big Block to get stupid with lol! :saweet:

One of hos videos about heads and why you shouldn’t just bolt a set on without checking certain things.

I found that one incredibly interesting. I would've thought AFR quality to be better than that. On a big block FB group, I saw another set of AFR's that I believe were even worse than these.

I built my 454 using an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold and cam combo. Its a 1500 rpm to 6500 rpm torque motor. Here is the power its suposed to be able to make. I’m wanting more power so thats why I want to replace the heads with Aluminum heads and new cam combo, and forged pistons on my good GM rods. I’ve got a steel forged GM crank in it.

If that engine you have can still run, I'd prob run it so you can get the truck back on the road and enjoy it. That'll give you time to find the parts combo/builder you want and time to save up to do it the way you really want.

Yep, exactly what I’m going to do. Its a good motor. 4 bolt main stock block. Just the earlier two piece rear main seal is all. Those motors ran for decades just fine. I will get it running and save the Vortec 454 motor for something else.

That's why I told you to keep it.
It's ready to go, stop wasting time and money, you'll never drive the k5.
Just figure out what you want to top it off with, tbi, carb, mpfi...
Just choose one and go for it and let us have some fun.
Otherwise I am coming down and taking it home :pimp:

That list of those wanting it has substantially grown. Even customers coming into the shop seeing it tarp covered but who know their Square body trucks apparently, have asked about it. My buddy said numerous customers have asked about it. I told him to tell him we’re going to be coating racing and competition off road parts. Get their attention that way. Coat headers, all kinds of different parts, coatings, and applications.

Lot of people looking for a deal. I do it all the time.
People see stuff stuffed on a corner and think, this guy will sell that to me for 100 bucks type of thing. He will never get to it and I'll get it cheap.

I’m going to talk my son into building the Vortec 454 with me to drop into something cool. Hes getting a hair up his but to drive and wants a cool car. I’ll teach him and walk along teaching him jjst like I always have. We’ll see how much be wants it by his amout of effort and output. Simple as that. Not going to baby. He’s 17. Time to man up. Learn some man skills.
