454 Motor build

454/620 hp build part 16. Honing valve guides

Well gee, I didn’t think I’d have trouble finding a good looking set of big block valve covers. Not happy with much I see. So just for the hell of it, I’m going to run to a local still in business hot rod shop Team C performance, in Lakewood, to see what they have in the way of BBC valve covers. I’d like a set if tall covers but don’t kniw if I have clearence. AC bracketry and alrernator bracketry.

I think I’m just going to run a set of short covers for now. I remember that being an issue.

Roller rockers or high lift cams may let the rockers contact the "short" valve covers too...wonder if they make a "medium" height valve cover that'll clear the valve train, but not hit any external things ?..

Oh yeah,I remember seeing those--look like super thick gaskets ,only made out of aluminum...

I’ll run shorties with spacers if necessary. Honestly not realy picky about getting this looking perfect or like some show truck. Just want it running reliably with no leaks and bs. Wiring issues, crap like that. I’ve got to get this thing back on the road before I can’t. Obviously would be a Bad ass rig to give to my son befkre I’m gone to remember me by.

They do. Called Cheater valve covers. They look stock but have another half inch of height I believe. My 511 or whatever Ebke wants me to build will need them.

I’ll get pictures at the hot rod shop if I make it there and buy valve covers. I’ve looked for and found good used ones, but VC are not all that expensive. And opening up shiny new ones nobody’s had their filthy paws on is fun lol! My filthy paws are ok of course lol! :saweet: :D I don’t want cheap stamped steel ones unless a set of thick gage quality Moroso covers. I jad thise on my 396 and they look good. But I want a 2-piece for rocker adjustment, but will keep oil with sash guards from pouring over the valve cover while you set your rocker/valve gap.

If thats still how it done lol!

All big blocks needs gold anodized moroso valve covers.

Haven’t seen gold ones since the 80’s!

Gold Moroso’s almost guarantee a lil daylite under at least one front tire on launch! :D, almost. Surely a HP gain for sure, probably 50/60 HP! LOL! :saweet:

Then I can drop one of these in it, ya know, to be legit and all lol!
