454 swap....running good, looking at on board air

I have put some miles on this now, and mpg seems pretty good if you drive nice. If you dont drive nice, that fuel gauge moves pretty fast.

I have only pulled a small load with it, (3500lbs) a load that drug the 350 down on the hills, and the 454 hardly noticed it.

does anybody know where to find the oil cooler hoses for this 91 burb? I have the filter adapter, and the factory external oil cooler but need the hoses.

Do I need an oil cooler? Will be towing fairly often, and 5qts seems like not enough.

you can pick the hoses up from a local parts house, i made my own but my brother bought his from advanced auto

Any body used retrofit rollers in a bbc? I have a noise that I suspect is them.

I have them, what noise?

As long as your radiator is keeping everything cool I wouldn't worry too much about adding one

not a bad noise, sounds like 16 quiet sewing machines.

Never really thought of it that way, I am used to diesel stuff that oils the underside of the pistons and oil temp runs significantly higher than coolant temp under heavy load

Oil temp does run hotter in most cases, piston temps are the cause. Running lean or hard exacerbates the issue. Really not something easily figured out without checking the oil temps under various conditions.

I've got access to a 454 and a 350 I can measure oil temps in (454 with no cooler, 350 with) I just need to get my hands on the right temp sending unit to do it. And find the time.

Just a little update, mpg has been better than I expected. 10 running around, driving fairly nice. 11-12 towing, and 12 unloaded highway mpg. Seems pretty good, considering no overdrive, and i drive 65-70mph.

I dont really have any numbers for when it was a 350, because I didnt put many miles on it after it was made 4x4. so far, I have put a little over 10k on this 454.

next on the list is on board air. I tried searching, but anybody do a york on a serp belt big block?

12mpg towing?? towing what? how many #'s?

thats incredible, if credible!

12 towing 8k, taking it fairly easy going 65. not flat ground though..made the same trip in a hurry once, still 65, but on the throttle for passing, hills, and takeoff. didnt want to check, but guessing 6.
