I think that it should be good all the way around. I don't know that you would notice any difference between TBI and Vortec at low speed, more in other RPM and load ranges. But I wouldn't skip the 4L80E to use the TH400 if you were going to want it later. That makes for less tuning in the long run.

Especially if the vortec and 400 comes with the harness and stuff

You could make good progress going that route

Still waiting on reply from seller of 454 Vortec on milage and transmission. Hoping there's not too many miles on it. If so, I'll pass.

With the vortec you'll need a newer fuel pump

Will the AcDelco EP381 work? I have that as my spare for the 350 TBI. If not it's no big deal. I'll supply it with what's needed.

Nevermind.....just looked it up and it will work.

As for the mileage on the 454 vortec, 90,000 miles. And he's asking $1500 for it. Can't I get one for a lower price at a salvage yard? It's 3 hours away so I'd have to go look at it and try to talk him down some. Could be a wasted trip if he's firm on the price. Plus me and my son would have to pull it.

Decisions, decisions. I hate to pass up a 454 vortec if it's not a bad price.

1500 for just the engine or with? Seems like a high price, especially if you need to pull it.

Price includes all brackets and accessories, A/C, wiring harness, computer, radiator.....everything on the motor and attached to it. He might toss in the transmission because it slips a bit. I'll end up rebuilding it if he let's it go with the motor.

It's all still in the truck. It starts with no smoke, or leaks. He only wants the body and frame. He won't let the engine be removed until someone buys it because it's still a driveable truck. This way you can start it and hear it run. He said you can drive it but the transmission slips.

Installed aint all bad. You get to test it that way

All of this is doable, but I'm new when it comes to doublers. I'll do some research and see what I come up with. Seems like the 4l80e will do everything I need.

Adding a doubler to a TH400 using the 205 and 241, will I be keeping the SYE that's already on the 241 or will that go away? Looks like more research coming. Thanks for the help.

This is going to be one bad K5 when BB17 gets here. I......can't......wait. :waytogo:

Sell the SYE kit for the 241, the 205 is where you will need the SYE

Ok....going to go look at the vortec 454 and hear it run but it won't be for a couple of weeks. Owner said he'd knock off $200 if I help him remove it. I told him I'd bring a cherry picker but he said he would use a tractor to help pull it. Plus he has all the tools necessary to do the job.

So if I want it, it's $1300 for the engine and everything that's attached to it including the wiring harness and computer. He's keeping the radiator and someone he knows with a transmission shop is getting the 4l80e tranny. Hopefully it will start and run with no issues. I can take it for a test drive and make a final decision.

As far as the 350 TBI installed in my K5 now, my boss is building a 1969 El Camino and is interested in buying my engine if I get the vortec 454. He just purchased a set of vortec heads for the 350 TBI he has now but the motor is not in good shape. My 350 only has 32,000 miles on it and runs great. Win win for me in the long run.

This is not a done deal until I get it home but so far it looks promising. Updates after the road trip.

In my opinion, the pre 1996 units seem to have the least amount of hard parts failures, and the cores are more plentiful and less expensive. But, no matter what you end up with you will want to apply updates and upgrades where applicable.
@Greg Ducato

What rebuild kit for the 4L80E would you recommend? I'm not adding anything over stock to a Vortec 454, just some daily driving and BB17 trails.

The greatest upgrade I ever did was using a Vortec 454 in place of the TBI 350. But the Vortec system itself is a literal POS. So I TBI'd mine and it will spank a factory 454 TBI all day. And looks identical on the outside. EGR can be difficult if you need it but not impossible.

Are you still on emissions there?

If not, factory delete that turd stuff and upgrade the tune while you're at it

No emissions check here. We'll have to work together to get this running without the "factory turd stuff". Not too familiar with the vortec stuff, unless it's similar to the TBI. The tune I'd like to learn to do also. Sounds promising if I can get this 454 I'm interested in.

I just caught this thread. I have a sb400, th350, np205, 5.13's, and 44's. Truck does good offroad and will do 65-70 down the road (rattles your teeth out).

Now even with a BBC you will want a doubler. It's not about the power to turn the tires, I can spin all 4 in low, it's about the control to accelerate without blowing the tires off. I don't have the low speed control I need without a doubler. That's how I earned the "bull in a china shop" reputation.
Do a doubler, 241/205, 203/205, or whatever, you will never regret it.

I really want to do a doubler. I'm just not to educated about building one or how it works.

I would like to keep the 241 and work it with a 205. How will it work with the 4L80E? Does it allow me to take it on the highway without too high of RPMs compared to a TH400?

Would the doubler work better with the TH400 or the 4L80E?

Lots of questions so keep the information and links coming. I have plenty of time to research and build. :1zhelp:
