4L80 or TH400?

Used when the trans no longer shifts on its own, you shift for it. Originally a race setup now working into the 4wd world. In essence it turns the auto into a stick shift with no clutch pedal. then you would want to run a gated shifter or the likes to make sure you get the right gear.

ok, so that is good because it gets rid of the computer, and its good cause it gives you more control?

as long as you don't mind having to shift. And don't forget to put it into first when leaving a stop, forgot to do that on a manual 400 in a camaro, burnt it right up. Of course that was with a 800 horse motor though.

i could get used to it. all my other vehicle have been manuals.

what about the difference between reverse and normal valve bodies?

would this allow for some sort of compression braking better than just pulling down on a regular auto, or the same?

As far as compression braking it will be the same, but beware some race kits remove this feature all together. Some manufactures leave it in for their offroad versions like TCI's 400 manual offroad.

Next, the reverse is the pattern of the gears you shift through
Normal pattern(like your column) is this
P-R-N-3-2-1
reverse is this:
P-R-N-1-2-3
It just allows less shifting between reverse gear and 1st

You won't see to much compression braking in an auto without a doubler anyways

Here is an example of a manual 4l80

pricey though, the kit alone isn't bad though

that site has way too much stuff for me to look at, especially since i am not that familiar with autos.

If you find a core then all you will need from them is the shift kit, TRANSGO has one out now as well I think. All of the other stuff is for extreme power. With a tbi350 stock mechanicals will be fine.

edit: compression braking won't be any different from stock on the street

ok, now what about the difference between a lockup and non lockup converter. for off road reasons, is a non-lockup better?

is this what you mean? "1. Quadzilla Shift Kit - Full manual shifts - the transmission will be in the gear you select and changes to any gear you choose when you move the selector. No computer or wiring needed, rated at 900 + horse power and has full throttle 3-4 up-shifts. This is the Street Rod transmission of the future, as more and more people install motors with over 500 horse power. Cost $295.00"

A lock up will only affect fourth gear and below that is the same as a non-lockup converter. If you go manual valvebody you will lose the lock up function unless you wire a switch to engage it.

It is only an efficiency concern. The lockup makes the rpm's in an auto and a stick look the same by removing the slippage in the converter.

Yep that is the kit. Don't know if it includes all the clutches, steels and seals though. You might also need the dummy plugs for the case unless you can leave the stock computer ports unplugged in the case.

oh, ok. i thought people were wanting to make it not lock up. as if it had something to do with low speed. so really, its just a matter of getting a solinoid in there with a switch. not a prob for a child of the tech generation.
