Not practical...
I had a 1972 Chevelle station wagon that was mounted on a 69 K10 Suburban chassis ,I bought it in 1989 from a friend who got the car in FL,it had a mint body, but was originally a 250 six powerglide "stripped" model, with NO options,no AC,eved had a factory "radio delete" plate covering the hole in the dash!..he did the 4x4 conversion, after I bought it I added a 1973 454 motor from an Impala, and numerous other "upgrades"...
It was tastefully done, and built to be road legal in NH,which had some rather strict rules on such vehicles..he added Chevy Vega bumpers under the OEM ones to meet the height regulations, and used all 10 of the original Chevelle body mounts to the frame, and modified the chassis length to match the wheelbase, and mounted the body so it sat very close to the frame,to avoid that "slapped together" ghetto look..by law,its doors could not be more than 25" from the ground..
The car was a lot of fun, drew lots of attention!--it was a chick magnet, and guys would flip at car shows I brought it too....and it would go anywhere, and climb any hill you pointed it at..but after I owned it for 6 years,it began to lose its appeal..
I had a harder time getting an inspection sticker every year (no one wanted to risk losing their inspection licence for giving such a non-stock vehicle an inspection sticker)..and cops watched me like a hawk everywhere I went with it..and often pulled me over or drove up while I was parked, and asked to see my registration, and how I'd gotten it on the road and insured..I sold it in 1995...I do miss it,but don't miss the hassles of inspections ,and being pulled over in it..
I've seen a 69 Camaro, and a 69 GTO,an 80's Malibu, and many other 4x4 "conversions"...they all were decent looking, but I don't think a classic muscle car should be wasted for such a conversion..the guy who built my Chevelle did it to be different..he'd seen lots of El-Caminos converted over the years, and wanted something similar, but could haul more people to car shows and swap meets..I bet it would be VERY difficult to get such a vehicle inspected around here now..--so before I'd go converting anything else,I'd make sure it was not going to only be legal as an "off road only" toy..pretty costly "toy"...I would like a Chevy van with a 4x4 conversion though!
