4x4 not working

Y’all overlooking the fact that if it has 2h and 4l, that is the full range of shifter motion. So it can’t be the linkage not getting full travel.
It is possible something happened to the detents and he is hitting a partial neutral or something
I was just thinking the same thing. The pattern is 2H-4H-N-4L so 2H and 4L are at both extremes of the range of travel on the shifter. I could see if 4H worked but he couldn't get it in 4L. It's been several years since I had one of these apart but wonder if they messed up assembly on the mode fork (2wd to 4wd) where it is not fully engaging, but when you go to 4 low it lets it pop in. The mode fork and range fork run on the same shaft so I could see how this may be possible.

Yeah, I was just thinking in generalities of the shifter hitting the body on 203/205's...

didn't realize that the shifters and patterns were much different on 208's

If there is a body lift or the transfer case lowered, maybe he’s using he indicator on the shifter to say which gear he’s in and the geometry is off and he’s actually between gears???

Some comments on some previous replies. The style or status of the locking hubs shouldn't matter if they are not getting any power to the front in 4H but it works okay in 4L. As far as using the positions shown on the shifter I'm not sure that is possible. The physical detents are within the transfer case. You can clearly feel the shifter pop into each selection and not like you have to precisely place the shifter in the correct location....on mine as soon as you pull it out of 2H it basically pops into 4H, then N, then 4L. I'm not sure you could even make the shifter stay between two positions unless you held it with your hand.

Got it, he seemed to not be too experienced is why there’s so much speculation, wish he’d reply to answer some of the questions.
